Those with shetlands, do you ride and lead?

In the preparations for moving in with the lovely OH we have been looking at places to keep Loki. At first we hoped to find him a place with a local seasonal trekking centre 5mins walk away that is run by a lady with her own horses but unfortunately that fell through as she only has mares and didn't want a gelding put in with her established herd :(

So we have gone with possible option 2 - looking at the local estate's fields which are slightly further away but still within a reasonable distance by car. If we end up getting one of those I will need to get a companion pony and have been thinking about a shetland.

The OH does want a horse of his own again at some point but not right at the moment and as we both love shetlands we figured a shettie would be perfect to keep my lad company with the added extra bonus that I am small and light enough (5'4" and 7.5 stone) to ride it on the odd occasion.
Also my very far in the future thought was that when we eventually have a little one we'll have our little shettie there for the little one to learn on :o Providing of course said shetland isn't an old age pensioner by the time we get round to procreation ha ha! ;)

Anyway enough of the babbling and to the point - do any of you ride and lead your shetlands from your larger horses? I was thinking it would be nice to take them both out together for hacks, it would be good exercise for the little one without having to cart me around all the time but I worry that either the shetland would decide to go under my lad (15.2hh) and we'd get in a tangle or that maybe it would be too much for the little one - although I have worked with shetlands before and know that they can easily hold their own in a herd and in one particular case lead them in the galloping by a fair whack :)

What do people think? Am I just dreaming? :o

My horse is under 15hh and the sweetest thing ever. I decided to start leading the 9.2 shettie from him and it didn't go well. My horse that has never kicked, kicked the poor little sod right in the face. I had planned on getting them used to it for when my son is big enough to hold onto pony on his own but I don't want him getting kicked too!

Maybe I gave up too easily, should I have started with a lunge rope and gradually brought him closer? I don't know. It wasn't fun anyway

Yep :)

It didn't work for us because the Shettie's much faster and forward going than the pony doing the leading!

Ha ha! Brilliant! :D

Cheers everyone, nice to know it can be done :)

How would you go about starting the process?
I wouldn't want to end up with a situation like minimilton (poor wee shettie, was he/she ok?) had :/ Loki is a very sweet boy and hacks out next to, in front of and behind happily.

Good! Must have been horrifying though! Yes that's another good point for sheltands isn't it, they are hardy little sods ;)

Great picture _HP_ your Shetland is adorable :)

OP, I would lead them together on foot at first, one each side of you, if that goes ok, allow the led pony to drag behind to make sure the big horse is not going to kick him. I'd then move on to riding the horse and have someone leading the pony next to you, then take the lead rope but keep your helper walking close by until you're sure they are both happy.

Thank you! :D

Having said that it is not massively practical as my horse has a large stride so the Shetland has to trot or canter everywhere. Plus the Shetland likes to try bite my mare's knees, evil b*gger!

Lovely photo, little devil bitting! Nice to see a youngster enjoying her pony!
