Thought on whips?

If you cannot move your horse from standing still to a canter or a gallop without a whip or booting the crap out of it you cannot ride.

Lots of people have no problem riding their horses safely, on roads and anywhere else, without all the crap like whips and spurs and harsh bits.

I can, all my horses ride the same, so there is no reason why anyone else can't.

So every international rider cannot ride? Hilarious, would you please come and demo at my yard please, I would love to see you in action on my horse

When my fresh young horse is focusing on the alligator lurking in the hedge and not feeling my outside leg mechanically asking for shoulder fore left and right bend, my energy level rises as I realise the vehicle coming towards me - a Ford Focus - may just be about to have a feely, focused, low energy green baby horse as a mascot on his Ford Focus bonnet.

To prevent this Feely Ford Focus Fxx up, I will apply a quick focused tap with my schooling whip to my alligator focused horse and we will all survive to enjoy more feely focused fun in the future.

Always carry one as you never know when you might need it - either on a naughty horse or as one of my bosses once said - "In case you need to fend off a dog when hacking"

A whip correctly used is an extension or back up. An ignored leg aid is backed up by a tap behind the leg, if that's ignored then the tap is stronger.

As an extension it tells the horse on the lunge to work more with the hind legs.

When leading it can get a reluctant horse to move off smartly - no need to tow the horse along.

Has many uses but should never ever be used in anger or when a horse is truly frightened or confused.

I carry a schooling whip most of the time, rarely use it. say if I was in halt and squeezed to move forward and the horse didn't move straight away, I would reach back and tickle the whip on this arse (not even a tap, just touch him with it) just to say "hey, listen to me!"
sometimes I tap him with it to get more power from him so I can bring him back to me and so he is in front of my leg, not behind

I can too, and I carry a whip; don't use it much, don't have to as they UNDERSTAND what the leg means. They learned that in about half an hour, reinforced when necessary with a flick of the aforementioned. Useful tool, if you know how to apply.

If you smacked your horse so that it quickly shot sideways, you could avoid the collision. Not ideal but better than a dead rider/horse. I have been in a situation where my horse planted dead, car coming so horse got a smack so I could get us out of harms way.

I really don't understand your question. Maybe I need a western saddle, a western bridle and parelli lessons to become as brilliant as you.

In the meantime I will continue to teach my young horse to move away from my leg into a soft contact, help her achieve self carriage and become a balanced, polite and pleasant horse to ride. Then I might put a great big hunter stallion on her and breed a foal I can practise my terrible horse keeping and battering skills on.

I prefer a length of plastic pipe to terrorise my horses with, it makes a good noise but does not mark them. Time for the final check before bed, I will have to decide which one to frighten.

Ffion, you weren't there, van hit my stirrup as it went passed, the well timed smack moved my horse just in time, just enough, so yes it probably did save my life, almost certainly saved my horses life.

Though I too want to see this for my very eyes, please PM me your details Pale Rider, I want to check you out, may even come for lessons if you can back up the bull.

Unfortunately not everyone is so super skilled as you and they don't all have super schooled horses or brave horses that calmly go past scarey objects or away from their friends.

I'm a good rider and my horses have been well schooled but there have been times when I've used my whip to remind them or sharpen them up if they are not fully focused on what I'm asking them to do.

TBH anyone who tells me they have never used a whip is either a plod along rider, very novice or terrified that if they hit the horse it might bolt/buck/rear with them.

She's not frightening her horse but getting it's attention back so that she can proceed in a safe manner.

If a horse is frightened of the whip then it has been used harshly - the horse has not been educated to accept the whip as an extension of the leg aid.

Here lies the difference - it should be possible to carry a whip on any horse without the horse being scared of it.

So not as good a teacher as a typer then. I am a very good student at most things I do and I am genuinely interested, shame you are too selfish to share your knowledge. I am highly suspicious of people who won't back up what they say so due to the fact that you refuse to back up what you say I don't believe it.

I was sceptical when told, amazed when shown and blown away when I tried it myself, my OH was doing this 30yrs ago so hardly new age ideas.
If I am looking at a new horse, I say hello there in my mind and the horse responds with an ear turned to me or moves forward that's a plus.
I know it sounds crazy, but some, not all horses are tuned in to thoughts.

Very well put. My connie has never had the whip misused on him and you can tell as I can wave it around his head, carry it and raise my arm to change it from one side to the other without so much as an ear flicker. WHen I give hima tap, he responds smartly but not dramatically, he thinks of it as a back up to leg aids, not as a tool to frighten him.

They do say that when the pupil is ready the teacher will appear, so you never know what the future holds.
The thing about what we do is, its no good unless people are committed to wanting to study it, otherwise your just wasting everyones time. No commitment no play I'm afraid.

Just because people compete on an international level doesn't mean that much. You saw the Olympic's, some awful displays of horsemanship. (Carl and Charlotte not included in that by the way).
