Three horses die at Kempton racing

A quick google shows the Government receiving 4.1 billion pounds from the horse racing industry, so you can safely say racing is going nowhere anytime soon.

Kempton was horrific to watch and the aftermath was also an awful read. The press managed to spin the reporting of the Ferguson owned horse as being such an awful loss to Ferguson. I found that distasteful, the true loss was to the lad or lass who looked after the horse day in and day out. Ferguson might have patted it a few times and was no doubt pleased with the 194k it won. The horses are just a good day out for wealthy people. One of Fergusons useless horses was sent to the sales recently, it fetched £1000 and was bought by its lass. I thought how sad that story was, after fees and transport Ferguson might have netted £500, the price of a few bottles of good wine to him. He could so easily have gifted the horse to the lass and thrown in a bag of pony nuts. Perhaps he could take a leaf out of JP's book when it comes to providing for his old horses.

I enjoy racing and I really enjoy seeing small trainers do well with cheaper horses.

When that light goes on inside your head that Says, that is not right, you have choose

There's enough cruelty going on without watching such beauty suffer from a brutal death, and what for, fame, fortune, money, a bunch of over excited people jumping around kissing each other because their horse has won, while yards away a horse lies dieing or dead

No that can never be right
Exactly ! Especially when most of the punters haven't a clue about horses and most of the owners couldn't even reconise ' their' horses if
you showed them two similar animals !!!

They only one caring are the stables staffs. All the others are mostly drunk or stupid or both !

Apart from those of us who do change their views on racing, of course 🙃. Also hunting…

Pretty much always from being a racing fan to totally falling out of love with it, very rarely if ever the other way round. Too many sickening fatal falls and catastrophic injuries, plus the massive wastage rate.
But were your changes of heart due to debate on here? I doubt it.

I’m an owner… and that’s pretty rude!

oops, sorry, i am sure that you are a caring owner.

But i have been working in racing 10 years and i can count on one hand the number of respectful, caring and knowlegable owners i have met.

Money and fame is what interest them !

I am not talking about group of people owning part of a horse, they aren't in it for the money but mostly for the social side.

I think one of the turning points for me was the realisation that these animals are disposable.

If jockeys were dying at the same rate, it would not continue. Human life is too important to lose hundreds of lives a year just for sport. Can you imagine if 200+ jockeys died in a year?

I adore seeing a racehorse looking fit and well. It's amazing seeing one come through the finish still full of running and making it look effortless.

It's just a pity they will not remove the fences, raise the minimum age for racing and do more to protect the lives of these beautiful animals.

Punters would still come. Money would still be made.

True

It's hard to know how many punters or day out at the races people they lose from not making some big welfare changes

I have seen reports that racecourse attendance is down and wonder If welfare is an issue for more people than is acknowledged or even if its calculated in their efforts to increase attendances

After all its a lot of horse folk who attend not just punters and corporate entertainers etc

I love racing, but only NH racing..have done for nye on 60 years. I wont stop watching but I do feel sad that it seems to be going the way of the flat, big money owners, big money horses and swanky days out for those with the funds to support it. Im sure back in the day , NH racing was a sport enjoyed by the smaller owner, Cyril Griffiths anyone?? My personal opinion is that a lot of the flat bred horses, who are started too young, simply dont have the bone for the job. The big, upstanding hunter types are no longer the norm, why do you think trainers are so precious about the ground they run on, they know that a lot of their charges simply dont have the conformation for the deeper winter ground. Climate change and our weird winter weather is obviously also an issue, noone wants to be hammering horses over those fences on firm ground
Of course, accidents will happen whatever you do but I do feel that the way the sport is evolving isnt necessarily a good thing :(

I’ve watched racing for years and prefer jump racing but after seeing some fatal falls I switched to flat racing and then seemed to see fatalities there too , horses breaking legs seemingly for no reason . I stopped watching last year and have started watching a bit of jump racing again recently, luckily I didn’t watch Kempton but that day sounded really bad and I’m sure it would have stopped me watching again ..
