I have an ID X Appy and was so shocked to read this. Take the bit out. There are lots of really kind bitless bridles out there. Problem solved and he’ll love you for it.
All fine but what if OP wants to compete dressage- cant do it bitless but then again you can’t do it in a gag either so probably not the case here

Also not helpful when my ID is over 700kg and has a strong mind! I would love to have the option to totally go bit less but sadly that isn’t an option. Please tell your ID x Appy I mean no offence I came here for help not to offend.

I would say I like Waterfords. Again they stop any leaning.
But if you ultimately want to dressage what is he like in just a plain old French link? Mine went well in a JP French link. In the arena. I never hunted using it.

I would need to warm up in the gag I think then swap it last min and hope he hasn’t quite cottoned on, he is slowly getting there as I’ve been schooling him by making him work from behind and giving the rein so he can’t brace on it.

My dressage knowledge is zero but don’t you have to warm up in your comp tack?

Hello OP. Have you considered a consult with a Lantra certified bit and bridle fitter?
I haven’t but thanks for recommendation I had a bit fit with someone qualified and local and he ended up being recommended a harsher bit of kit that literally stopped him going forward at all!! That went back immediately
