When I learnt to ride in the dark old days it was on a Jefferies General Purpose saddle.

Apart from the odd Jumping saddle if I was competing I have always ridden in a GP.

So yesterday I had a saddle fitter come to fit Vardi out for his first proper big boys saddle. She brought a variety of makes and both Dressage and GP.

I got on in the GP rode him in walk and trot. Shortened the strirups tried again but somehow he felt unbalanced and not right he was also running on a bit in trot.

Tried the Dressage and wow I suddenly had a balanced horse that came on the bit and when I asked for trot it was smooth and quiet.

I can only put it dowm to the fact that my position is so much better in the Dressage saddle, my legs are long and wrap round him I sit deeper and straighter.

I really did not believe there would be such a difference. Doubtless to say I have purchased the Dressage version.

One question anyone hack out in theirs?

I hack in mine occasionally, but it has big knee blocks so have to keep my stirrups at dressage length really. That's not much fun for hacking if you want to go faster and jump over stuff!!

Haha! I have had to hack in mine recently as my jump saddle isn't fitting my mare! My god I can feel it in my legs, but I am most of the time nice and secure in it which is a bonus

A good saddle can make a huge amount of difference

Yep , I hack in mine but I dont really jump so doesn't bother me about what we may or may not come across out hacking

We do have to tackle the little horse-crossing things which Darcy wont walk over, he has to jump it and I'm slightly scared

Hi Slinky yep I think the Mojo is back now! Still get butterflies at the " What if that happened" but my horse just continues to surprise me.

Not ridden for 15 days yesterday so I hop up and he is perfectly sane I then subject him to being saddle fitted for 2 hours try out 6 different saddles with mad woman running round beside me and plunging her hands under his saddle and there is no reaction at all.

I am convinced that his passport is a lie and I have in fact purchased a 20 year old rather than a rising 5 year old. According to Farrier he is out of the one totally sane WB stallion and all his progeny are cool calm and collected.

I know when I first sat in a dressage saddle last year I was amazed at the difference, it also helped me to feel more confident as I feel so much more secure. I always hack in mine, I feel so much safer.

Equador long departed unfortunately but he leaves behind much of his essence in Frozen Form
