Could anyone give me more info / experience with tildren, my horse has had navicular for over 10 years and has been kept sound by remedial shoeing but this is no longer working and she is lame. Could tildren help even with a horse with significant navicular damage?

Yes I believe it is good in cases of navicular. Here is a fact sheet. http://www.georgevetgroup.co.uk/pdf's/equine_factsheets/TILDRENFACTSHEET.pdf

my horse had it 3 times in a year (to get as much in before the 12 months was up on the insurance). This was for bone spavin.

Now I wished I'd gone for the fusion using alcohol (ethanol) injection as this was 1/3 the cost and worked 100% better, but not sure if you can use this for navicular (you should ask your vet). If you want any informaiton regarding this then speak to Ed Shaw at Corner house vets if you are in the Midlands area.

My horse had Tildren for bone spavin and when re x-rayed a year later there had been a significant improvement.

That is so helpful thankyou :), it says it works best in cases where it has been present less than 6 months, my horse has had this problem for over 12 years, has anyone ever used it for long standing conditions?

My horse had 2 courses of Tildren last year for ringbone (and it also helped with his spavins, though it wasn't for that). First time it was truly amazing, took several years off him and he moved like a dream. Felt superb. It wore off after about 3 months and he was treated again with no effect whatsoever.

Thanks for the info chestnut cob, this is a last ditch attempt to see if something will work rather than her being on lots of bute every day, not sure whether to try it or not really

It's expensive - will your insurance pay or are you paying for it yourself? It was around £500 each time for mine. It's worth a try if insurance will pay but I don't think I'd bother if it was coming out of my own money (sorry if that seems harsh!).

No insurance due to the horses numerous ailments which is why I am not sure whether to try or not, thing is I have been searching for something rather than having to pts but its an expensive thing to try with no guarantee
Btw doesnt sound harsh at all, just honest, your reply is much appreciated!

Have a look at this!

Thankyou for this, barefoot is not an option unfortunately, we tried to keep her barefoot initially but she didnt cope at all despite quite a lot of effort, we put raised heel wedge pads on and these have kept her sound for over 12 years, if we tried to take them off now there would be numerous other problems as a result of her wearing the raised pads for so long. I am not sure what exactly happens but the tendon could have issues after being lifted for so many years.

There are a lot of rumours surrounding bute and there is nothing wrong with feeding bute long term at a relative low dosage. I understand its not meant to be fed long term but my friend gave her horse one and a half sachets of bute everyday for 8 years without ill effect so I would consult your vet and see what his opinion is.

Its like anything, continual use can cause harm but we are talking years down the line not weeks or months. Maybe it would give your horse the retirement he needs for five or six years before making the decision to pts. It can cause stomach ulcers, reoccuring colic and mouth ulcers, but like I say this can come on slowly and be many years down the line.

sorry to be the bearer of bad experiences but I had two doses given to my horse earlier this year to treat arthritic changes to neck and spine. Sadly it had no effect whatsover and he had to be pts :(. However, this was for a different ailment than yours so I hope you have a better experience....

Hi, I had Tildren, alongside cortisone injection, worked fab then felt something had worn off so had another cortisone however the effects were much less this time. This is for ringbone. Now I find regular shoeing, with natural balance shoes and management do the best for my mare. I turn her out as much as poss despite her hating being out, she gets ridden everyday as I find she's worse with no work; I only take her on surfaces, no roadwork etc etc and touch wood she's still out jumping. If something happens like galloping round field on hard ground I give her a bit of danilon

Hi there, my lad had it last week so early days yet but vet says we should be able to tell if its worked within 2-3weeks so will update with what happens :-) he has what seems to be long standing arthritic changes in hocks and SI that seem to be very active atm so hopefully it will halt the boney changes (joint injections don't seem to have helped, and showed no improvement on Danilon)
Fingers crossed it will help him..................

My mare had this just over a month ago for 'bony changes' in her hocks, she is much happier and more comfortable and it has made a huge improvement in her movement.

Will have to await xrays later to see if it had made much difference to the changes in her hock.
