Has anyone got any tips for getting a pony to stand still when mounting?

He will stand still if someone stands in front of him giving him treats but I am now trying to progress to not needing this as someone isn't always around!

I've got him to stand until your weight is over his back and then he marches off, he is a pretty busy pony naturally.

He has had his back, teeth and a 5 stage vet check recently.

I did sit on a gate and wait for a horse to stand still for 30 to 40 minutes once. It never took that long again. He was a busy person and liked to get on with things.

I bribed my mare with treats. She gets one once I am on, assuming she stood nicely.

Can you have a session just working on mounting, starting with the help of someone else and then progress to doing it on your own.

Don't let the helper give treats until you are actually on!

Patience and lots of it. When I got my chap minute left foot was in stirrup he was off! Not with any badness but just wanted to get going. As soon as pressure in left stirrup took foot out and stood back down for couple mins... Took about 3 weeks but now he will stand rock solid.

teach your horse to move his hind quarters away with a little tap of the whip at the top of his leg whilst on the ground.
Make sure he understands this command both sides.
Once mastered, using a mounting block attempt to mount, when he swings his hind quarters away reach over with the wip and tap the leg opposite to you (so hind quarters come towards you)
It took my horse 10 mins the first time, then I never had a problem again
Worth a try.
