Tips for stopping my dog smelling of horse wee??!

Well, my horse is now on her in-at-night winter routine, and the complaints from OH about the smelliness of the dog have begun...

My dog comes to the yard every day, and generally has the free run of the place so is usually pretty mucky by home time. She always gets a hose down, but this does not seem to be enough to get rid of the pong of horse wee.

Am I going to have to shampoo her every day, or is there another more ingenious solution out there??

I really don't want to stop her having free run of the yard as she loves it, and is normally romping around with several other doggy friends. Also, even if I stopped her from getting in any stables (difficult with 30 of the things, but maybe possible!) she would still be walking (and rolling...) in the wee that inevitably runs out under stable doors, so don't think I can simply keep her away from the offending pee. I wondered about some sort of doggy overalls, if there is such a thing??!

I'd be very grateful for any help!

Don't laugh now...

My spaniel has a waterproof jump suit. It zips along the spine, cost about £10, has 'gaps in the right places' and just her paws (and head obviously!) stick out. It is great that she can tank around filthy places with it on and all I have to do is wipe her paws afterwards. She also is a roller in fox exhaust... so much easier to wash the coat than the dog each time!

My big dog doesn't have one, but he is very large, short coated and extremely clean so doesn't really smell. (Apart from the warm, eggy smell that has just met my nostrils as he snores deeply with his head propped on the radiator....)

I did used to find that when my horses were bedded on straw EVERYTHING smelt more; dogs, my boots, even my hair. Shavings, or even better still, shredded newspaper, just don;t have that same 'niff'...

Good luck!

bath her with tomoto ketchup.

Really?! I'll give anything a go once, but would love to know the theory behind this one!

Ooooh, jump suit sounds good! Do you by any chance remember where you got it from?

My horse is indeed on straw, and I too end up stinking. Really really reluctant to change bedding as straw is included in my livery and I am otherwise happy with it.

Oh, and eau de fox poo is a very regular scent round my house too!!

Thank you both for your suggestions!

Company is called Barking Mad Clothing. They have a website. I think the spaniel fur is particularly prone to picking up smells. I clip her feet and she is clipped generally, apart from the 'valance; type frill. she looks very smart and is much quicker to dry after a bath.

Tomato ketchup does work, but so does medicated vosene shampoo, which is far less gross to work with. The tomato juice theory was always suggested for skunks in the states, but I don't find I get too many in Buckinghamshire ;-)

I just found these - look good but possibly expensive.

I have a similar problem to you - a wet muddy spaniel straight into the lounge.....

Oooh, thanks for the link. The hurtta overalls look fab, and am doing some searching for a stockist. While on the hunt I came across these: http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product_group.asp?dept_id=126&pg_id=99 Probably not as high-tech as the hurtta ones, but look cheap and cheerful.

My lounge carpet does not bear close inspection, that's for sure. Still trying to teach the mutt how to use the door mat...!

Brilliant, thanks Julie. I have found the barking mad website and am going to go for a fetching trouser suit (!) in blue for my darling dog. She is a labradoodle (I know, I know) and so does not have feathers like a spaniel, but does have lots of fleecy fluff which is just made for collecting mud and pongs. I do clip her, but tend to leave her legs and belly which doesn't help I suppose.

Very interesting about the tomato ketchup and vosene shampoo - thanks for educating me.
