To hog or not to hog (not quite straight forwards)

Piper as a hairly bear:

Very fat :o

Points to consider:

1) he will be for sale (poss) next year and it will take at LEAST 3yrs to grow back properly. Nor or less desirable with a mane?

2) his forelock is rubbish by comparision and takes forever to grow and it's only this year it's started to look ok compared to his mane. Once hogged it may never recover properly .

3) he's rubbed off a little at the base (or I've pulled it out with the reins :o) but it will have grown back ok by next year.

4) he is shown a fair bit but he can do hairy or hogged although too small be a show cob (only 14.3 ish). He also does a lot of faster work (hunting and common riding)

5) he needs his mane plaited up for ridden work as he gets too hot.

6) He'll look very smart hogged.

7) it's hard to show in pics how stunning his mane actually is at the moment

8) he's about to get his feathers mostly clipped out as he's bogburnt/chewed them off (been treated). They will take until next year to grow back.

9) I love hairies but hogged is easy.

The clippers come out tommorow to neaten up his legs........

Basically it's a case of 'once done it cannot be undone'. If it would grow back within a year I'd just whizz it off but it really will take YEARS to grow back properly, esp his forelock. And as he's shown he can't have his forelock left on.

His mane is beautiful - I wouldn't hog him. If I could post pics I would show you my mare - now she's a case for hogging. Half rubbed out by rug, half on one side half the other looks like a bush.

Leave his mane on :)

He is the type that it suits, I would give any future owner the choice to hog/pull for themselves.

Personally, I think a hogged mane will put off more people than it attracts.

Nooooooo!!! Don't do it! he looks great with the long mane, unless you are going to take off his feathers and clip him out completely, but I don't think he'd suit it, he looks particularly fab in the show pic!

And that's coming from an ex owner of a show cob that was permanently hogged and clipped/trimmed and believe me if you want to go down that route you need some good quality clippers as you need to keep on top of it every few weeks!

Please dont hog- his mane is so beautiful re hair in the way- even if that neat plait took a while you can do a functional one quickly.

Absolutely not - he's beautiful and he needs it to see off flies. I always wonder if they've got sweet itch when they're hogged as well.

Without being awful I don't think that the hogged look really flatters him, I'd keep his mane!

He is lovely though and I'm sure that you will have no problem selling him! :D

Id leave his mane as it is. I dont like hairy but its easier for a buyer to chop it off than to wait for it to grow, so Id leave it like it is.

Leave it as this gives the buyer a choice.

I don't understand what you mean by he's to small for a show cob? They have to be 15hh or under for showing in my understanding? Mine ol just fit the height restrictions (156cms?)

He looks amazing hairy and would look beautiful hogged but you will be putting off half of the market by hogging him. At least if he is hairy and hog fan can choose to whip it all off as soon as they unload him ;) the other way round isn't quite as easy. It sounds like you really want to hog and have almost made your mind up but you will kick yourself when you come to advertise him next year!

I would normally say take it all off!
However in his case I'd say leave it, the buyer can then take it all off if they require.
Atleast that way, you won't be alienating half the market.
Good luck selling!

I think he has the most amazing mane - it's beautiful! I hogged my last welsh cob type pony because her mane was unplaitable through being chewed/rubbed off. She looked lovely hogged, but people kept asking if she had sweet itch(?!). I knew I was going to sell her so I let it grow back. She looked like a punk for ages, but with endless plaiting down and wetting it grew back better than ever within 8 months. My point is that they do grow back fairly well, but no, leave it alone, it is his crowning glory!

Have to agree with the others that your cob suits the 'hairy' look!

However I am a bit bemused that others think that a hogged cob would put off 'half' the market? I own to of these offensive hogged beasties and they look extremely smart.

I agree that I would be suspicious of a non cob type hogged, but to me nothing beats a smartly trimmed and hogged cob on the hunting field!

I think it would put people off if they are looking for lots of hair and feather.

Whos to say a hogged and trimmed animal has a full set of feather (and mane etc )to grow back, some have pretty poor amounts that isnt worth keeping on. But I think Piper looks better with hair, also.

Me, I prefer a hogged cob, I dont like hairy animals. Im not the market for any cob as they arent my thing, but if I was it would be a show cob.

Stand away from the clippers ! He's gorgeous and his mane and feathers are magnificent.
I'm not looking for a cob, but if he was for sale near me, I wouldn't be able to resist him. If he was hogged, I wouldn't give him a second look.

The beautiful hair of Traditionals is the trait that drags me away from my love affair with WB's.

Im another who loves clipping everything off, but i think with him it suits him hairy & it does leave the buyer with the option of what they want to do. At the end of the day hairy he can appeal to either the hairy or hogged market....hogged he will only really appeal to those that dont mind hogging. Sadly some people cant see past what is in front of them.

He doesn't have lots of feather though?

I'm going to go completely against the grain and say hog him! I think he'd look gorgeous :)

Yep, pretty much :o But I do feel it would be sacreligious to chop all that off!

He's too little to be a show cob as they're 15.1 (i.e 15.3). He's really the wrong shape and not 'hunter' enough to be a show cob.

Not right now he doesn't! :( He's not got the very heavy wavey feather of the brick outhouse cobs but he's more of a MW cob and does have plenty when he's cleaned up.
