to hog or not to hog?

This is my Dolly. She has had a terrible problem with mites, so the feathers had to go. Her mane was always thick, but whether it was due to the mite problem or not (vet couldn't tell me), the white section of her mane got thinner and thinner, that I felt hogging and starting again was the only option. I cried when I went in with the clippers. For some reason, the right hand side of her mane is just not growing, so I have no choice but to keep her hogged for now. She is a different type to your horse, but I think it suits her.

Sorry, haven't got a decent full body shot with the clipped legs as well.

This is my other one, Mac, who's mane also grows like a bog brush. He gets mild sweet itch, so made the decision to hog him a few years ago as he rubbed half his mane out. Think it suits him too.

He also went on a diet as was a real lard ass when I got him, and is arthritic, so needed to lose a few pounds to help his joints. He is a Suffolk cross.

I have a little native, but everyone at the yard has threatened me with a fate worse than death if I dare go near his mane with the clippers.

She looks like a new forest x tb type to me. Slightly too leggy and tall for a pure bred nf. But I'd say buy a tail rake and give it a good going over everyday. Wash it a few times a month and plait over and leave for a couple of days. I'd also grow the mane to the desired length of what a 'neatened' nf mane looks like - about half way down neck but neat but keep on top of it. Also muscle on neck will give it a better shape too :)

Nooo don't hog!

I would never hog personally unless I really wanted to go in show classes where it was required, I'd grow hers longer, the longer it gets the better it will lie, I use argan oil on my girls mane and it is very good for softening coarse dry hair.

AA I think yours suits it :-)

will give the oil a go if i decide to grow it, it used to be long before she was backed but it is just a great big double mop

Don't hog. Let the mane grow, brush Johnsons' Baby Oil or similar though it on a regular basis, and you will end up with a beautiful mane. My mare looks just like yours (colour and all). She came with a hogged mane. It took 1 year to grow to its natural length. It never needs pulling, is luxuriant and shiny, and except for one little quiff lies correctly - her mane naturally lies to the left hand side.

I hate hogging. Nature gave horses a mane for a purpose. Why meddle for vanity's sake?

oil makes it lovely and shiny i agree but nothing makes her mane lay on one side she has a true double mane:eek:

what breeding was yourmare?

Soozyq and AA both your two look very smart hogged and I much prefer the hogged to the natural look on them both (wondering now if my boy could pull it off) - sorry OP, don't think it would suit yours :-)

OP - no don't hog - she is the wrong type

AA - fab! What an amazing looking cob - how tall?

Soozyg - sorry no, again wrong type to hog

Basically points to look for to hog would be short legged, plenty of bone - around (9"+), stocky build, leg at each corner type - head of lady back end of a cook! But ... a nice roman nose is also good. Rough guestimate would be legs same length roughly as distance from wither to elbow - roughly!

15.1 1/2 aged 6, probably would measure if starved and worked to death, but that is not how I do things, so she will have a go at a maxi class if she holds her own locally.

LOL - my mare was measured at 15.3 - vet said he could get her down to 15.2 but I told him not to bother - 2 x producers have now told me that they would have got her down but I am happy to show as a maxi so not going to pursue that option!

She is very nice

My new forest is hogged :D but she's built like a tank!

Sorry about the quality, uploading from my phone to photobucket seems to have sucked the quality out of it!

I hogged my lad and at the moment it doesn't suit him as he has no topline. However when he is muscled and working he looks fab. OP yours wouldn't suit it I don't think and the same for soozyq unless he isn't muscled (sorry).
AA and the lady with the chestnut cob they both look fab!
