my older horse is a little scatty to jump...especially when he doesn't jump very often which is the current situation- he tries to leg it off with head in the air, is capable of a very quick stop and it takes ages of patient riding to actually get him to take off in the right place and make a decent non-inverted shape over a fence (but when jumped regularly he can jump nicely- he's far left in my siggy). now sharer has been making noises about wanting to jump him. i've said no way but then i think she thinks i'm just being mean- i'm really not, sharer hasn't jumped for 20 years and i think she didn't do that much jumping even then...should i just let her do it to see what happens or stick with gut instinct that there might be an accident!?

could you jump him first and let her watch? she might not be so keen then or she'll at least realise why you have said no before

i guess i could- i don't even like jumping it though anymore!!

i think the problem lies in that i took him to a hunter trial in may and he was a little angel- jumping everything normally and out of his stride. i think he must have looked quite easy (what probably wasn't so apparant was that he tried to stop at the first 4 fences and i was kicking his butt and shouting in his ear!!)

she also didn't witness the XC schooling session the week before where he was totally mental and plungeing around like an idiot/ galloping at fences full tilt...

so i think she thinks i'm overexaggerating!

Can you suggest she has a few lessons on a quieter horse first and then has some lessons on him for the first few times she jumps him - that way if it goes wrong she'll have someone elseto tell her maybe it's not a good idea? If she's not done it for a while and she's starting off small will he be any better or just as scatty?

probably worse...cross poles are for galloping through

TBH i wouldn't mind if she had some lessons- generally i think flatwork lessons first would really help them both before leaving the ground (i.e. to make them more secure, check brakes, steering etc) but not entirely sure how to suggest this without sounding like i think she can't ride!

yes it is me

but no its not that big
smirk.gif
its tiny on the takeoff and where the photographer is stood makes the landing look lower than it really is

its a pre novice BE fence i think- more a rider scarer really, as long as your horse is confident about you asking them to jump when they can't see the landing they don't really cause problems!

TBH thats how i'm getting about it- its up to her i guess...but i don't have time to do two horses if she breaks something
