I have been pondering this for a while.
I have lots of grazing (it is separate from the others on the yard), and 2 14.2 mares.
i have to bring them both in everyday and my field is a long walk from the yard,
i could take on 2 full liveries (upto 14.2hh)to live alongside my mares-the aim would be to cover some of the costs of mine and my daughters horses.
the question is (and has been for a while) do I really want to be tied down doing 2 more.
I work for a family who have 2 kids eventers (and a ****** shetland-said with fondness) who i have sole responsibility for , booking everything from bedding, feed, farrier, dentist etc.
I am aware of the pitfalls as I have a few part liveries and have always worked with horses
If I go for it do I charge all in or my time plus all extra's-what do people think is a reasonable price that they would be willing to pay. (I am in essex)
of course my other option would be do a 6 day week as full livery and owner does 7th day what do people think of that idea?

I know quite a few places that offer 5 day livery, with the weekends covered by the owner. This always seems to work well. Especially as you are looking to take ponies, which would then mean there was cover during the week while they are at school, but could do there own ponies on the weekend.

about 8 miles from chelmsford, 12x12 stables, flat manege, jumping manege, parrelli/play or lunging school, round pen, 100+ acres off road riding, good on-road hacking, mine have lived out at all year round till now (even in the snow), turn out is available everyday all year round, my fields are just over 3 and half acres and 2 and half acres.
the yard is not the tidiest but all field fencing is new and live electric, manege fences are new tall post and rail
so its pretty good really

Round my way (more the London side of Essex) I would imagine 7 days a week would be around £250 a month when they were living out and more like £450 if they were stabled and needed mucking out. Add more if you're grooming and tack cleaning.

If you were a bit closer to me I'd be trying to bribe you to take my 16.2hh, but think you're a bit too much of a mission from South Woodford ;)

Just remember that liveries are never as simple as you think they are going to be.. They always need help/supervision/a different field/splitting up in yard rows... etc:D

yes that has been part of my hesitation, I have done part liveries on this yard for 6+yrs now.
the help supervision and diff field is not a prob as I can pretty much do what I like at the farm/yard.

at 250 a month grass livery one would pay for itself and one of mine and that would be great

would you expect hay bedding etc for those prices (i am guessing yes)?

also for £250 a month would you expect a stable or just field?

I would expect access to a stable in case of injury or absolutely awful weather, but not necessarily a set stable if that makes sense?

I'd expect an allowance of hay and bedding and maybe basic chaff and nuts, but to pay extra for extra hay, bedding and fancier food :)

I think you'll only get away with £250 if make it clear you'll do everything for them so as to distinguish it as something over and above renting a field if that makes sense?

Maybe take a look on www.go-grazing.com in the livery yard section and see what more local yards are charging - although it sounds like your facilities are better than most :)
