Was driving home from doing horses at lunchtime and passed the most gorgous grey cob type with a huge white tail in pristine condition - v white and well groomed. I was so impressed I stopped and asked her (the rider not teh horse) how she kept it so clean!!

Anyway - she said she washed it like normal but when the ends start to go yellow (every couple of months) she puts some of the tablets u get for cleaning false teeth into a bucket of warm water and soaks the yellow parts until they whiten. She said she used Tescos own and only does the end as its the only bit that goes yellow.... I so wish I could have got a pic I didn't know tails that long could be so clean in winter - it was abt half an inch from the ground....

The best way I have found is, get some washing powder tablets for white washes, dissolve one in a bucket of warm water and then dunk the tail in giving it a swish around for as long as your arms can hold a bucket that high - about 10 mins. Makes sure you dont get it on the dock and then rinse it. The results are amazing! Might try the false teeth one before we go out competing on Saturday. :-)

I use Vanish as I can spray it on and not have to stand holding a bucket. Leave for 5 mins before washing tail with shampoo and tal will come out nice and white. Strangely enough it works better for my friends horse than mine so I might try the tooth whitener

Oh no!!!

I don't use it on or near the dock though. I also give it about 2 rinses as it gets shampooed, rinsed then conditined then rinsed again. I have used it for years and has never caused a prob with mine. Maybe I have just been lucky
