Hey everyone, was just wanting to ask a housetraining question. Toby has been fine in the flat when I am there and I was putting him in the crate when I was out. I have started to let him loose on his own for shortish periods of time - 2 hours or so. I always walk him 5 times a day, before work, at 10am, then at lunch (12.30) and after work and before I go to bed. This mostly as I have no garden to let him loose in, and I don't want him running about when the horses are around just yet.
Now he averages 3 poos at day (Sorry TMI), usually one first thing, one at lunch or after work and one before bed, sometimes 4. Yesterday took him for a walk at lunch time, poo and weed so let him loose in the flat with a kong stuffed with pate (doggy stuff) and everything was fine. No repeat of the theiving earlier in the week that was partially my fault and led to him vomitting 5 or 6 times in an hour.
So today thought, I'd do the same, took him for his lunch time walk, weed but no poo, this is not that unusual so stuffed his Kong and went to work. Came back to a poo on the carpet, not an upset tummy type poo, just a normal poo. Now when he was being sick the other night he did make the effort to go onto the lino to vomit on there and not on the carpet. Needless to say I was livid, not really too sure how I was meant to deal with it but I did show him said poo and said Bad Boy, did not shove his face in it but made it quite clear that I was not happy. He went and sulked in his crate.
So at 18 months old, can I just not trust him unless he has produced both, when I am at home he never asks to go out and if he has gone for a poo on his lunchtime walk he will then go until 10pm before needing another one, so he can hold it if necessary and I did give him adequate time to have one at lunch time. I wanted to ditch the crate, I don't have a lockable kitchen, its a kitchen living room sort of set up and there is carpet everywhere in the flat so no where I can leave him where he can't make a mess.
Am so disappointed with him, don't what else I can do. For now he will just have to stay in his crate when I am not in the flat.

No point showing it to him, he knows nothing of what u speak of or show after the act ;):D
To much space to soon, when trying to out source a crate u need to do it gradually, and u need to offer up a small space still as in not the whole of the house/downstairs, chances are he got a little stressed and was looking for u, this commonly makes them pass motions when stressed, think irritable bowl type scenario (I have it) and when waiting to do me driving test, I nearly followed through me guts where churning so much:o:D

I would start by leaving crate up with door open and going out for 20 mins gradually increase this time, (this will tell u when he is passing) if it's in a short space of time, its stress related for sure, anyhow come home, no fuss, and take him straight out to toilet, so he associates u coming homes with the "toilet", also block an area off where the crate is, so he does not have "to much space", increase the time gradually as u see he is "clean", then collapse crate and put his bed where the crate was.

It's very common, nothing to stress about.:)
When u have no time to do the short periods of leaving crate him inbetween, dont ask to much by thinking "oh I will try it now" when u don't know what time u will be back, only do it when u know its a 20 min leave at 1st.

That really is Too Much Information there Cayla :p

how missus, give me time to check me typos, I get wrong for them u know :p

Thanks, sorry was not being funny, just was desperate for some advice. I can see what you mean. I have a sort of hall way that is three times the size of the crate so might try putting him in there eventually until he can have the kitchen/living room bit.

Also I start sitting up this weekend, which i guess will be a massive change in routine for him, but as I sit up in my flat (lucky me with the CCTV right next to the TV) and have to go out every hour to check the horses then maybe this would be a good time to start.

Hi....what breed is your dog and how old please? Sorry, if I've missed this info, but quite new around here.

If the crate works for him,. I'ld stick to it for the time being. Have you taught him to defecate and urinate on command? Wandering around aimlessly on the end of a lead won't necessarily lead to the activity that you desire! :D Up the activity and start introducing a 'wee-wee' command or whatever you desire!

Also, if a dog was defecating four times a day that might be a bit excessive. What are you feeding??? Also, depends on age.

That would be better, even try putting a baby gate a small way from the crate, so he has the crate (opened) with a small pace then the baby gate, and increase the space gradually over a few months till the baby gate ends up at the end of the passage/hall/corridor:D, this would be far better than suddenly upsizing from crate to (shed loads of space)

Nice one, that would be perfect, leave the radio on, in your specified area, and place him in the area when u are in aswell as out, and don't forget a toilet break when u come in, but def no fuss or "Hi, im home" when re re enter.
