Tomorrow....

But if you can get him sound enough for the field is there not some way to give him a retirement? It seems really harsh to have him pts because he rips rugs:(

There's always one. If you'd read, GS has said the vet has stated it's time to call it a day. Which means it's not longer a case of even being able to get him field sound. It's a crap enough decision to make as it is, without people filling your head with doubts and guilt.

Really sorry to hear that the vet has confirmed what I already think you thought.

A little insensitive maybe (I'm sorry if it is), but can I ask what your personal preferred method is?

No its fine to ask .
I get the vet to give a like IV sedation then they are shot either by the huntsman or the vet I don’t mind who .
I lead them out then stand a little distance behind the person doing the shooting talking to the horse I shut my eyes when I hear the shots I go I dont look .

No it’s not, I don’t think you should have written that.
As I’ve said above I will be doing the same when the time comes. It’s not just ripping a rug. It’s a horse that’s bored, bored stupid and vents In other directions. I can’t speak for GS but I think it’s a similar situation to mine. The horse is happy with a purpose and unhappy/bored/frustrated with no job. Retired can be a long time doing nothing.

Tatts loves work ,doing things when he’s not he makes entertainment opening gates tearing rugs chasing the others etc etc on to top of that box rest although I can do it with him takes a lot of money he has to have sedation or the limb will get no rest and it’s very labour intensive .I have box rested him cross tied and in plaster it was an epic under taking but to put him ( and us )through four months of box rest with out come at best being perhaps field sound for him lose all this muscle tone and not be able to work to get it back no I am not doing it ,it’s unfair and only delaying the day for us
It’s going to be Tuesday weather permitting I won’t do it in a high wind .
I was trying to get him to eat some Bute or Danilon for pain relief just so he feels great for the last few days but no Tatts is not up for that so I have given up on that.
This will be his last lovely day in life the weather will turn horrid he’s in the field with Fatty I was going to turn him out in a nice spring field but I dare not but Fatty out in there so it’s the winter field with company .
hes happy out in the sun atm .
The longer you have had them the harder the wrench .

'The longer you've had them, the harder the wrench',, or 'the more memories you have, the harder the wrench' or sometimes, just 'the more the difference they have made, the harder the wrench'.
Either way, I think that it can be hard for the less experienced single horse-owner to understand that with experience comes pragmatism and the ability to put one's own feelings to one side, in the interests of doing the genuinely best thing for the horse in front of you.
I hope Tuesday goes smoothly GS, will be thinking of you and Tatts
