Too Heavy

I have just bought a new pony, and I know at the moment I am too heavy for him, and the weight I need to get down to to ride him. When I do get on him, will he let me know if I am too heavy? My friend got on him last night for 10 mins, she is slighly heavier than the weight I want to be, and he seemed fine and not bothered at all, although my friend said she felt guilty on him.

So my question is, if she was too heavy, which I doubt, would we know? What signs do we look out for? He is only 4, which is one reason I won't ride him yet. I know as he gets stronger, he will be able to carry more, but he isn't a weight carrier, and I will only ride him once I'm at goal.

It depends on how heavy you are, the size of pony, how muscular and fit the pony is and how you ride (i.e. light seat).

Well he is around 14'3 NF cross, but is very light. My goal weight is 10.5 stone and I won't get on him before I drop below 11. My friend weighs just under 12, and she only got on him as he was being naughty, to get him going forwards. He seemed happy enough with her on him. He has a young girl regularly riding him at the moment, who weighs around 9 stone, but he has been a bit nappy with her, and although she's a good rider, she just couldn't get him going forward.

You say he is quite light, but is is possible you mean light compared to a cobby type which you are used to riding. A NF can be quite capable of carrying weight, but only when they are mature, and in good condition and in regular work.

I've been for a nosey at your photos. :) He's lovely. I reckon you're about right. Maximum regular weight when he's mature, about 11 stone but, especially while he's young and unfit, less would be better.

I don't think 12 stone will do him any harm for a walk and trot round the block, it's probably a bit much for an intensive schooling session or long canter.
And I sold him , so I know!! LOL!

Iam 5ft6 and vary between 11-12 stone. I have regular ridden and jump 13.1hh ponies. One was med weight new forest. He was young so just did walk on him for short periods. The other was a conny x anyehere from 10-16 yrs old! He was an xwide fit in saddle so nice and chuncky and muscled. We walk trot cantered out hacking and in school and jumped.2-2.6 all fine.

OMG you brought the gorgeous Ollie? (Have I got his name right?)
I'm green with envy :D

I would have thought he'd be fine with you for short sessions at your current weight.

I think you definitely need to post pictures!
