Too late to clip?

I last clipped a horse of mine late february time, he's usually fully clipped but with the bad weather and him not doing as much work as he usually does I gave him a trace clip.
Now his summer coat has grown in nicely where he was clipped, but his back is still wooly and although he is actually molting it isn't coming out quickly enough for my liking and with him being grey we have white hairs EVERYWHERE!
He's out competing most weekends and does quite a bit of work this time of year - I'm wondering whether it's too late to clip him again!!?
Don't want to ruin his summer coat... I tried to get hold of some lister covercote blades, the type that leave on a bit more coat that the normal fine or medium blade but have since found out that most places have had them ordered from lister for months and aren't expecting them any time soon..
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Get out the rubber and plastic curry comb and get grafting!

I would never clip in May- only exception being the odd small native pony who is really struggling or has lice!

Show cobs are clipped all year round so it can be done, as his grey I would say do it but his summer coat has come through on the clipped bits so it will spoil it a bit but he will look neater if you are competing, what breed is he?

Mine gets clipped whenever I feel he needs it, he's a very fluffy cob. It's never ruined his coat I've only not clipped so far because I can't stand too long. I've used the shedding blade/furminator which have been fab.

Thanks for the replies! He's Connemara x tb - but more Connie than anything else. I really am tempted to just clip him.. I've never, ever clipped this late before and if somebody asked my adivce on clipping this time of year I'd probably say avoid it but being in this situation now with an inbetween summer and winter coat I'm in a bit of a predicament!

Cos the summer coat will be coming through so if you clip now, the hair will keep growing back and might look quite untidy unless you keep on top of it.

A little swift way to remove some of what is left...

They shed loads and loads by rolling, so wait for it..... :D get him wet then turn him out, he will roll and roll removing hand fulls, then you can bring him in look in horror at the no longer grey grey, and give him a bath (when even more will come out) then rug up nice and warm and pop him in the stable, next morning youll find even more falling out!

For some reason it seams to kick start a lot of mine in to their proper molt.

This year lots of them are late because of the weather we have had over the past year and a half.

Dont clip if you are showing unless it is show cob, you wont like what the judge will say to you!

I am about to clip one of our ponies, because shes thrown a summer coat most horses would be proud of in the winter this year! but then she is an old girl bless her, and I think she has got a bit muddled :D

Thanks so much for all of the replies!
If we get a warm (ish) day this week I will try the bathing and turning out idea - then bathing again and rugging up.. Thanks :)
If this doesn't work, then I may consider clipping at the weekend... :(
Competition wise, he's not a show horse - we do quite a bit of BS and to be honest there are a fair few horses clipped out all year round that we see.
Wish so much that I could have got my hands on a set of lister covervote blades though!!
