I have a chunky 14yo Welsh Cob with mild arthritic changes in his front fetlocks who is a very good doer (think looks at grass and gets fat). He is on restricted grazing and gets a token feed of HiFi light with Equivite and Cortaflex added. He has a bute as and when he needs it which is very rarely since he had a steroid injection into his worst fetlock. He is in light work hacking only and I am building him back up slowly after 3 months off due to lameness (when we discovered the arthritis). I read this forum alot (too much) and am becoming very aware of all the different supplements available and just today seen people raving about Magnesium and Cinnamon. Now I want to try them!! My back lady has also recommended feeding seaweed. And someone else has suggested Devils Claw. My poor boy is already eating more powder supplements than feed, I can't possibly add any more! I think there is a niche in the market for feeds with specific supplements already added...I want the best for my horse but can't possibly give him anymore gritty dinners....what does everyone else do? Are any of you as confused as me?

Speedibeet - it all sticks together then - My mare is very good at leaving a very neat little mound of powder at the bottom of her feed bowl !!

ETA = You can even cut out the HiFI if you like. Speedibeet is a highfiber low sugar feed so should be fine weight wise too

I use speedibeet or very sloppy Calm and Condition as the base for additives. The only thing i would say about additives is to add one at a time and try it for at least a month. If you throw everything into the feed you will have no idea which is working, if any, and be wasting money

If you are not careful you can put so many additives intothe feed that one counteracts what another is supposed to be doing.

There are such an array of additives & suppliments available that it is easy to overload your brain & get totally flummuxed. All the various feed companies have nutritionists & their email contacts listed on their websites. It may take them a few days to get back to you but if you contact them with your horses issues & what you are currently feeding they will come up with a suggested feeding regime specific to your horses needs. Good Luck :)

I would honestly just swap the cortaflex to cortaflex ha, the normal cortaflex is not for horses with problems where as the cortaflex ha is. Iv seen fab results from cortaflex ha liquid. One horse was about to be PTS but is now a different horse.

I use devils relief and superflex on my boy who has ringbone. Find these work well together. He also on topchop lite and veteran vitality which needs soaking so all mixes in together. Also on a lite balancer as he a good doer. He looking the best he ever has done on this diet and he 18 this year.

Previously used blue chip dynamic which relieved stiffness but rate the devils relief and superflex more.

Very good idea, didn't realise it might be better! Can you just swap to the maintenance dose or need to do the loading dose for it? Think I might try that for a month and then maybe add magnesium...the Blue Chip does look a bit pricey and possibly fattening (going to email them to ask though)

Am I right in thinking Devils Relief/Devils Claw is a natural painkiller, like a mild bute? Maybe I should consider what I feed more from a pain relief point of view? What I am feeding isn't bad its just I want to make sure I'm doing the best by him.

well i would opt for 4 cartrophen injections from the vet and ditch supplements, bar a glug of oil every day. most mineral/vit supps are not absorbable by the horse (or human) they do have a feel good must be good factor from the recipiant/receiver. devils claw is a natural inflammortory but is very toxic to the liver. worse than a bute per day.

Do please be very careful what you give your horse, be sure that s/he needs it and monitor the effects carefully.
I have just found that glucosamine supplement was making my mare very anxious. She's like a different animal since we stopped it.
TBH, I have found that magnetic boots work better than any supplement for arthritis.
