I have changed my horse from oats to Top Spec Turbo I have noticed that his bed has become much wetter. I know it has added salt but I think it must be too much for him. He has automatic water so I don't know how much more he is drinking. Has any body else had this problem? .

Are you feeding turbo alone? I think it is designed to be fed alongside another complete feed? Feeding alone might mean you are feeding too much and hence too much salt. Alternatively if you are feeding another complete feed as well - which one? You could be doubling up on salt.

While I know each horse has it's own "capacity" for salt, it is much higher than human. I feed my mare approx. 2oz unrefined sea salt in her dinner every day, on top of her having a salt lick available ad lib. I have noticed a direct correlation between the amount of time she spend licking the lick and the amount of salt in her diet. On the days I forget or run out of salt, her lick is noticeably smaller the next day. When I add the salt, she doesn't use the lick so much.

Conversely, my gelding won't eat his food if there is exta salt in it, and he very rarely uses his lick. During summer he is a nightmare to get electrolytes into. :/

Sorry that was probably completely off topic ;) Anyhoo, while an increase in salt may encourage more drinking, this is probably a good thing, especially in winter when the cold can put horses off drinking. it keeps the kidneys flushed and stops the urine from becoming too concentrated.

made no difference to mine but I fed it as a top up, so not loads every day. I feed a good dose of salt in every feed anyway.

Hello everybody, thank you for your comments. I am sorry I should of given you more information. He is being fed Turbo alongside Top Spec lite balancer as recommended by Top Spec. He is being worked 5 times a week and needed something to keep his energy up.
