Totilas rather pales by comparison

I seem to remember reading that somewhere they have taken to fitting the bulls with a velcro vest and putting velcro on the darts to make the sport more animal friendly. Obviously there is still distress caused to the bull but I think this is a really good compromise between tradition and animal rights.

I have loved this horse for years, I would give my eye teeth and everything I own to have the relationship these two have :)

I would have him above Totilas anyday! But then I preferred Fuego's test at WEG too :)

ETS: Bulls are not killed in Portugese Bullfighting, I know this only makes it slightly better.

DISCLAIMER: yes, this is bullfighting (no bulls killed in the video, just maimed :( ) BUT the horse and the horsemanship are spectacular. The stallion is called Orpheo (stable name Merlin) and he's 7/8 lusitano, 1/8 quarter horse. It's cutting, reining and dressage all in one, and I've never seen a horse like this one.

Flippin heck. That partnership.

It was so hard to watch. Such great admiration for the partnership between man and horse; and then the close up of the barbed prong that was driven into the bull...

I couldn't bring myself to give a bullfighting clip a hit! Disgusting """sport""".

In the south of france they hang garters round the horns, and the bullfighter has to remove them. Yes the bull lives, and they are quite revered afterwards, but I still think tormenting an animal for fun is wierd and backward...

this horse is amazing and i know totilas has his faults but seriously what is with the campaign against totilas on her at the moment

Part of me wants to hate this but actually that horse looks like he is amazing at his job and should be appriciated for that.........I close my eyes to the bull stabbing

If you liked this - go onto Youtube and put in Doma Vaquera. This is the spanish dressage that arises from bull fighting training without the bulls and is so much more exciting than our style of dressage. "Martincaballos" has a good collection of stuff on Youtube. I can watch it all day. The Hispano arabe is bred specially for this type of work and is a cross between either a lusitano or andalucian with an arab or anglo arab. They are fabulous and so rare in this country. If I win the lottery I will import one!!

Merlin is wonderful but what IMHO is particularly lovely is the lack of tension in the neck and tightness in the reins.

Agree the Hispano is a super sport horse, just have to correct you, when crossed with an anglo arab you actuslly get a Tres Sangres (three blood), there is a separate Hispano studbook in Spain but sadly not for the Tres Sangres so most of them went on the partbred studbook. My claim to fame is that I bred the first papered Tres Sangres in the UK partbred studbook - here she is:

Thank you for the tip about Doma Vaquera - I shall go and investigate! :)

I think the bullfighter here also fights in the Spanish style - ie killing the bull. I found this video via another featuring the same rider on a different horse. He'd dismounted and there were several people closing in on the bull (which looked more than groggy) and the horse, which was loose, charged straight into the bull, pushed it over and ripped a chunk out of its quarters

I think I'll stick to Doma Vaquera, but I can't help wondering how many foals Merlin/Orpheo has on the ground and what they're like. What a lion of a horse.

My little crabbet Arab mare is on loan at stud and was put to a pre dressage stallion last year , sorry for the ignorance but would the foal be a Hispano then?

While we're on the subject of andalusians/lusos etc and dressage/equitation... take a look at this (no bull involved!) I'd love to do this!!

Now that's the FASTEST trail class I've ever seen!

Amazing. Would like to see the standing martingale/tie-down removed but otherwise, fabulous.

And he's not docked, as so many of the doma vaquera horses sadly are.

Uh oh, a standing martingale... where exactly? I missed that, may need to find new hero... :(

I'm sure my horses would do beautiful lateral work if they had horns coming towards them - spurs to the extreme!

Well my horses would leave - sharpish, they would not do what this horse is doing!

There is no overuse of the spur either, the horse is supremely schooled and completely at one with his rider, believe me, overuse the spur on an iberian and you don't last very long!

Ah Sirena - many thanks for the correct info. There is a tres sangres for sale in Devon - I want it - I really do!!! I am envious of your lovely girl!

Off to buy a lottery ticket - the 10 euros we got on Friday in Euromillions will not stretch that far!!

Sorry I have no idea!!! But it is a stunning little baby.

Well, if you want it to go on to Enlightened Equitation forum, they will love you and your new foal!! It's like the hispano/anglo/arab/pre/luso forum extraordinaire!!!

Ask either sueblue or heather.

Lol I dont think that will be happening! I had a bit of an on-line spat with Heather! I am not in to breeding which is why the mare went back to her breeder to have bubbas.:)
