Hi I’m new to this forum so might not have put this in the right place.

i have an ifor Williams HB506 and pull 2 horses regularly in it. Who weigh 1250kg between them (700kg and 550kg).

i got my licence in 1994 before it was necessary to take a b and e test and currently use a Mitsubishi shogun 3.2 D-ID automatic to tow which has capacity to tow of 3500kg.

unladen weight of trailer is 920kg, gross weight trailer can have is 2600kg.

I am looking to get a new car and wondered whether a Mitsubishi L200 automatic (max towing weight 3100 kg) will be suitable? all the calculations are making my brain ache??

thanks in advance

yeh agreed I wouldn't be towing with something that long although plenty do. Whats wrong with your Mitsi?
It’s probably not going to make it through this years MOT. It’s 2002 model and done 190000 miles - still a good workhorse but my hubby wants me to get something newer and safer for pulling my precious cargo xx

Yes I would. Oh think you might get a bargain as my local Mitsubishi dealer always has a few shoguns on the forecourt at what I thought were very good prices considering the car you get.

What’s up with it? They don’t make them like they used to so a newer one might not necessarily be better (We have an ancient Delica and I’m currently trying to persuade OH that one more bit of welding is worth it for another year ?)

I tow with virtually the same set up, a 506 but with a SWB Shogun. I tried the L200 and while it was lovely to drive it was just to long with the trailer and I only needed 2 seats with lots of space in the back. I haven’t seen many SWB’s for sale recently and the older LWB models are getting harder to find. Don’t like the newer sport model much either, it’s more Chelsea tractor than a proper workhorse.

I wouldn’t get a Shogun sport I don’t like them they don’t deserve to have shogun in the name ? My hubby said no older than 5/6 years old So we don’t have to spend lots on maintenance - we have practically rebuilt my current one it’s had everything but a new engine ?

I would go to towing clinic... length isn't normally a problem. Certainly there are two of those LWBV's towing other than horseboxes of substantial weight n length where I am. Worth asking ROG for the legalities though

I sometimes tow with the L200 and it is long, but not so long that it puts me off and really doesn't seem longer that the Discovery.
I was told to put something heavy in the bed of the pickup when towing.

To my infinite chagrin, no four-door pickup in the UK has a bed longer than 5ft on a good day. If you could buy a truck with a 6ft bed and four doors, would I own it? Yes. But I'm American and have a Skoda Yeti. That's how depressed I am about this situation.

But if you're concerned about the length of an L200 v. a Hilux or even a (not tiny wheelbase) Shogun, don't be. It's not that different.

Thanks I tried to post on ROG but wasn’t allowed for some reason - everyone on here has been really helpful though thanks

Buy the L200. It’s a proper tow vehicle. It’s not too long, you will get used to it quickly.

We have the Shogun sport (Pajero in Aussie) also in addition to our tow vehicle and have towed the horses as well as a 2 tonne ski boat as a backup when the Ute wasn’t available. Whilst it did the job it’s a vehicle that can tow rather than a tow vehicle.

I use a L200 and it's tow capacity is feeble compared to the shogun, you can really feel the weight of 2 horses

I hate towing and would be delighted to get rid of it

I went from towing an Ifor 401 with a Kia Sportage to towing a double Cheval (2003xl) with an L200 once I passed my trailer test. I wouldn't say I'm particulary good at manuvering, and I haven't found the length of the L200 to be an issue.
