towing whith pickup - hilux, navara, L200?

I tow with a navara which does the job ok. Wouldn't recommend them though, our engine blew up a 70,000 miles a known problem apparently. However Nissan refused to reimburse us as we didn't have a perfect service history. It gets serviced but not with the over priced Nissan dealer. Other people I know with problem navaras eventually opted for the Hilux (better build quality). Navara problem featured on BBC watchdog.

I have a Navara and I really like towing with it - makes for a long combination but the wing mirrors are fab.

I tow an Ifor 505 and 2 x 15.2 horses with no problems and I actually find it easier to maneuveur than my old Discovery.

It's only done 30k miles though so I haven't hit the 70k mark that Bordermare mentioned...

 
Echo Bordermare, I had a navara that I loved and it towed perfectly well but it also blew up, made it to 110,000 miles though.
Wouldn't buy another now - another website about it is knackerednavara.com or something like that!
 
We tow with an 09 Hilux, and love it, it has an excellent turning circle, never underpowered and not bad on fuel consumption. The DCi Navara models do have a bit of a habit of blowing up I'm afraid! We also find the Navara too high geared for towing, but the Hilux was ideal.

Friend has had nightmares with his new shape navara, engine failed at 68 k loads of electrical problems, noisey dif, vibration and paint comming off roof, seem to be poor build quality

Am running out of cars though as I wouldn't ever get a RangeRover, my Disco was crap and my YO hates her L200!

sadly the hilux has a poor towing capacity 2250kg
and very expensive
 
I tow with 05 L200 warrior, its lovely to drive and tows brilliantly two big horses. But as said above turning circle is poor.

I wouldnt not have one though, and the pick up is great for all your hay and tack and smelly dogs lol!
 
I've got an L200 & it's great.
Mine is a year old & has a small turning circle, although I know the older ones don't.
The back is usefull for putting tack, smelly dogs, horse food & children in.
I work in a rural area & last year the roads were very bad in the snow, it coped brilliantly in the terrible conditions. It also copes well with mud & slippery conditions, I can't fault it.

anyone got a Ford Ranger? they have a 3tonne capacity!
 
My neighbour has an 07 plate Ford Ranger (2.5dci) and it's really good at towing!! I haven't been in it when he's towing a horse trailer, but when my Vauxhall Frontera broke down, he went and picked it up on his trailer (so total trailer weight was 3t) and it coped fantastically, wasn't bothered about the hills at all! And it does really good MPG!
 
The one thing to watch out for is insurance. We've just bought a Hilux and 'normal' car insurance people won't insure it as it is classed as a commercial vehicle.

Also the price of Pick Ups has increased by about £1k in the last month. We had an absolute knightmare trying to find one that we could afford. If you didn't mind not having an open back you can get the station wagon versions a lot cheaper than the pick up ones.

It's not as good as the Disco 3 we also have but as a car to take to horse events and not worry too much about getting mucky it's great we've towed the Ifor Williams with it as well as flat bed trailers with forklifts, pc jumps etc. on and it's been fine. Ours is the 09 and we got the truckman top for it which is great 'cause you can fit so much stuff in it without the car smelling.

Yes an 02 one never had a problem towing with it, OH towed a tractor with it once. . . . .

its a real work horse and we wont part with it
 
I've a new shape Navara. Its the old shape which have the engine problems which were highlighted by Watchdog,. Saying that at the moment I've been unable to move our horses for three weeks as its in a Nissan Dealership having a new clutch (2nd in 20000 miles and 10 months!). The first clutch went after 55k miles (another known Navara issue) and a Nissan Dealership replaced it as a waranty job. The clutch went whilst we were at a busy road junction 3 weeks ago. The RAC picked it up and took it to Nissan. Another dealership have had a look at it and found out that the first dealership did not do a proper repair and were negligent. Despite this its taken 3 weeks to agree it is waranty work and during which time I've had to pay for hire cars, extra accomodation (I work away from home) people to move our horses (as well as our self employed consultancy business we sell throroughbred and coloured yearlings), its cost me over £700 in expenses. I've now got to travel 125 miles and a 5 hour round trip to pick it up whenever it gets finished. I've spent umpteen hours on the phone to customer service, trips to dealerships and lots of my own time and money trying to sort it. Its cost my business lots of money!

L200s and Toyota's are heavy users of fuel. If you want my advice Nissan - NO, Mitsubishi - NO, Toyota -No. Get a proper towing vehicle and purchase a short wheel base Land Rover Defender 90. I will be swapping the Navara for one as soon as funds allow.
 


oh, hummmm..... i have found posts on the web about the rangers having clutch probs as well now

as for insurance, shouldnt be too much of a sting as I currently have a renault trafic van - thats why i need a pickup. I have the van as we have 6 dogs - we do agility. And also use it to tow. It tows fab actually, but we want 4x4 to hopefully save us being stuck in fields....
 
Get a Land Rover. We've 3 dogs and that's our next vehicle. I've had one before and they are the best towing vehicles by far. Plus you just chuck the dogs in the back.

Don't get a Ford Ranger, they are crap. We've just traded in our 06 Thunder for our new Hilux. The Ranger was woefully underpowered towing up hill, the fuel consumption was terrible and it has to be serviced every 6000 miles!

We researched this and apparently there was a misprint on the brochure and the Hilux is rated to tow 3 tonne.

Not the post 2006 rangers they went from underpowered thirsty crap to top of the class!! the newer ones are the best value, tow capacity, fuel consumption and 12000 service intevals,
