Trail blazer dressage eligibility

It depends on how many points the horse has at the level, I expected it to be combinations but it doesn't seem to be, it is all on the horse assuming the rider qualifies, it is odd that the horse can have points at any levels above the one it is competing at but I guess that is to allow novice riders to have a true schoolmaster providing it has not been too successful.

I don't think Rose has been registered in the last 12 months so you can do any level according to this.

BD Points for Second Round Qualifiers and Championship Finals 3.2 A horse / pony that is currently registered with British Dressage, or a horse / pony that was registered with British Dressage at any point from and including the first day (dressage warm up day) of the preceding Trailblazers Championship Finals must not have more than the following British Dressage points to enable the horse / pony to compete at a Trailblazers Second Round Qualifier and / or at the Trailblazers Championship Finals: Maximum horse points per level for the Second Rounds and Championships
Intro 50 points at Preliminary and none at any levels above
Preliminary 100 points at Preliminary or above
Novice 100 points at Novice or above
Elementary 75 points at Elementary or above Points at the level(s) below that at which a horse competes are not taken into account.

Hi no Rose's last points were in Jan 2016. She has 40 ish at elem and 11 at med. I'm not going to do any proper BD this year, doing quest at Novice and looking forward to doing some RC stuff although I have to compete at elem for that so when someone suggested I should look at doing trailblazers I was very surprised that we seemed able to do prelim. thanks for your reply. I think I'll just get out and do prelim and novice and see how far we can get.

The rules don't limit the classes people can compete in if they have fewer than the set number of points. Before prelim points existed the rule was that you couldn't have any points at the level above the one you intend to compete at. That was much fairer. I would think it would be unfair to have a combination who has competed at medium in the prelim class, even if the rules strictly allowed it.

I've only competed my little cob to elementary and he is eligible for prelim according to the current rules. But since I would have to be prelim gold at BD I wouldn't enter unaffiliated prelim. We entered the novice instead.

For clarity DC the OP has a new horse so they are a new combination ;) therefore both fair and within the rules.
Sounds like a good plan, oldie :) I had wanted to do some trailblazers on one of Millie's many returns to work because of the reduced financial commitment vs BD since I didn't know how long she would stay in work but she had too many points even for the elem class. The championships look brilliant.

Hi I've only had Rose for a few weeks and she hasn't been in work for nearly three years, I have no points. This year we are just going to go out and have fun either UA or quest as we are not ready to compete BD proper.

Suggested to me by JS, she's had clients in a similar position who have got to the champs and have found it a really great way of getting started with a new horse.

Oh my mistake, I thought we were talking about the same combination. When I was watching last year there was a combination I know compete presently at advanced medium (regionals and everything) in the novice and I thought that was poor. Hence the slightly spiky response! Sorry 😐

Also trailblazers is lovely and I highly recommend it. Great atmosphere, most people are friendly (not overly competitive but still pushing) and it’s a great experience.

No problem, tbh I was surprised that I could compete on Rose, which is why I asked for clarification as I thought i'd missed something. I'm not a pot hunter but I'm keen to get out as my last horse although good enough to do BD and be quite competitive was difficult in the warm up so we never got started. Rose is potentially good enough to do well but needs a lot of work, she's not the horse that was out competing at medium in 2016 but hopefully in time she will be again.

When you say riding club I assume you mean BRC qualifiers? I *think* you're eligible for Novice at BRC. Rule G6.2 on page 17 of the rulebook states that horses automatically lose 12 BD points per full calendar year from the last year they won points. If Rose last won points in Jan 2016 she would have lost 12 points a year since then. They lose the highest level first so her 11 points at medium would have gone in 2017 along with 1 point at Elem and she'll have lost a further 12 points at Elem in 2018, taking her down to 27. The limit for Novice is 35 at Elem or 0 at above, both of which she now falls within. I'd double check with BRC but I'm almost certain you'd be ok for Novice.

Thank you that is really helpful, I really thought i'd have to do elem and we are certainly not ready for that yet.

Sadly no. We did an OK test at prelim, by no means our best but was surprised to see that we were in last place, so a bit dispirited I withdrew from the novice. However when I got my sheet back, they had completely mismarked my test and I just missed a qualifying place by one mark (I would have gone through on collectives). should have done the novice really so it was my own silly fault. If you are going, have a great time and I hope you do well. I'm told it is a lovely occasion!

Thank you oldie and humblepie, that’s really kind. Sorry to hear you’ve had to withdraw hp.

Not looking forward to travelling in this heat today - thankfully he’s a very settled traveller so barring the unforeseen I think we’ll be ok...
