This is probably a pipe dream, but I'd love my own transport. YO said that she will take me to any competitions etc that I might want to do, but I don't like to ask, and if there are any that I want to do, she is already taking others so the transport is full.

Anyway!

My budget would NOT be huge - £2500 max probably.

I passed my test 3 years ago so can drive up to 3.5 tonnes on my licence without having to take another test. I currently drive a renault clio but have had a 4x4 (Freelander) in the past so am happy driving one.

Which would you get? A small lorry to take one 17.2hh warmblood type which I can drive on my current licence, or another 4x4 and trailer (but I'd have to take test).

I would struggle with the parking at the yard for the lorry, but I might be able to hide lorry/trailer at school somewhere...!

Which is safer? Which is easier? How much is plating etc for lorries? With 4x4 and trailer option obviously you just have to tax/MOT/insure the one vehicle and maintain trailer, but with lorry option you have to maintain two vehicles.

What would you get? What have you got? I'd be very interested to know!

I did the trailer test and am now saving for the 4x4 and trailer! Mine would be overweight in a 3.5T unless I won the lottery and could afford an Equi-trek, even then with fuel and tack it might be overweight! The lorry test is more expensive than the trailer test. I was concerned about safety with trailers but after talking to lots of people on here and at shows I realised if you drive sensibly and check everything like you're taught for the trailer test then the chances of having an accident are a lot lower! Probably no help whatsoever but still!!

I think for that budget you would struggle to get either a lorry or a 4x4 and a trailer (a freelander is not good to tow with).

It depends on so many things, e.g. how much driving you do and the type (if lots of short journeys in town, a 4x4 is going to cost a fortune), insurance groups etc and how much you are going to use it. Added to that, you need to look at payload - you could get away with a little lorry as some have a payload up to about 1.1T so that sould cover your horse + tack etc.

For me, I wouldnt bother with a 3.5T lorry - you need to spend a decent amount to get one with a good payload.

I had this conundrum......I've just bought an old land rover discovery, picking it up on saturday ( whoo-hoo) and then am planning on getting a trailer over winter ( nowt fancy, possibly a 'project' for OH).

This is going to be my daily car, as I live and work near the horses so no long distances, and OH has a posh car for family stuff.

Only thing is now I have to sell the beolved Golf.....1.9TDI anyone ??

we are hopefully doing the same thing - i have a golf too and are looking at getting an old beat up landrover so thats interesting!
