Hi Everyone

I have gypsy vanner yearling who will be 2 in August. Once he has turned 2 I am planning on starting training him. When I first got him he was pretty much wild, I managed to halter train him and taught him to lead and stand to be groomed myself. Although now he sometimes plays up when I am leading him and just wants to put his head down for grass. He also sometimes tries to bite. I want to start lunging him, I have tried but he doesn't seem to want to go in a circle. He just gets his head down. I have had a bit in his mouth before but not tried to work him in one. Just wondered if anyone has any advice on what I can do to get some respect and get him lunging. I am thinking of getting a trainer but would be nice to try get some basics done with him.

Thanks :)

Firstly I think it is far too soon to be thinking of lunging him, at not even 2 yet he is physically and mentally immature and would be best left until he is at least 3, concentrate on the general handling and manners, going out for walks in hand and let him grow up before expecting any more.

He will not understand that he is supposed to go in a circle, it often takes 2 people to get them started lunging, as above it is best left for another 18 months anyway, by then he will be more ready to learn and should pick it up more easily, there is no rush he has years ahead of him to work.

At that age I teach them to lead, tie up and pick up their feet - I wouldn't do anything else until they were ready to be broken in at three or four :)

I don't even lunge when I start them as I think going round in circles when they are young isn't the greatest thing for them, however I appreciate there are many ways to train a youngster.

Hi

Thank you for both your replies, he stands tied and I can pick up his feet I just have a few problems with leading him now. When I tell him to stand or walk quietly he just seems to do what he wants to do. I am lucky enough to have him at a stables next to a forest so I could take him for walks but he is too strong with just his halter. He also has a thing for chasing dogs. Do you think it would be okay to lead him in a bridle with a French Link Full Cheek Snaffle?
