I am currently fittening a rising 7 year old who from what I gather was broken at 5ish schooled for a while and did a couple of prelim tests then long story short turned out from last Oct to March this year. Last few weeks have just been walking her out on hacks with lots of hill work but today decided to give it a bit of a go in the school as she is looking much better. She is fine in walk but sometimes goes a little over bent, trot - she just seems to go very low and very fast and when you try and slow everything down she gets a little annoyed and prefers to break into canter. In canter which I let her do a couple of circles to see if that would loosen her up she again is very low and almost leans into the circle and gets really fast.
Just wondered whether anyone had any ideas?

i think it sounds as if she is very unbalanced - my mare had a similar story and we have only just, after 8 months, started managing to get a more collected canter - she would lean like a motorbike and go faster to try to balance herself - just persevere slowly, bit of lunging lots of transitions, try to collect her up when you start cantering her out in straight lines and it will all come together - oh boy does it feel good when you thinks you ve achieved something!

Looks like I should try lunging a little more and see if that makes any difference.
Thx

I would actually be inclined to do more transitional work with her - as this will get her hocks under her and encourage her to work better. Also lots of suppling work in the walk and trot especially.

Lunging never helps in situations like this I find, and can just encourage the horse to dig deeper in front, moterbike around and generally become even more unbalanced.
