training Q - with BHS stage 4 and PTT in mind

Hi all


having just completed my stage 3 I am now looking to the PTT and stage 4 and wondered if anyone out there can advise? I am wanting to use my own horses at home to prepare myself for this exam as due to work holidays I can't go anywhere to do a course. What training should I be looking at doing with them to get myself ready?

I am a competent rider, so wondering what I need to practice to be able to prepare myself for the stage 4? I'm going to buy the vet, equitation and stable management books to study from.

Also I'm up North so advice please on where to do stage 4 would be gratefully received even if I have to travel for it.

Also how can I prepare for the PTT? what do I need to practice? do I need to go and give lessons?

How 'up north' are you?

I know that you can do the PTT at Myerscough but they don't seem to do stage 4 anymore.

It should be perfectly possible to use your own horses for your preparation but I would think it would be a good idea to organise yourself some assessments as it isn't possible for you to do a course. Any riding school that does the apprenticeship schemes with the BHS should be able to give you assessments and let you know what to work on and give you a reasonable idea of when you are ready to do the exams.
 
For the ptt you will need to give 2 actual lessons that will be drawn order on the day out of 4, the 4 possibles are jump, flat, lead rein or lunge and you will need pre prepared lesson plans ready. You will do a written and oral test on jump distances, and questions on coaching and may have to demonstrate how to teach certain things (I had to demonstrate turn on the forehand). You need a few lessons as there is a protocol they expect you to follow and you will likely fail if you don't.

You also need to prepare lectures for which the subjects are in the syllabus and will need to make them interactive with a group of some other students and probably a few examiners.

Blackdyke is a good exam centre, horses all tend to jump well. Ride as many as different horses as you can prior to stage 4 and get someone with exam knowledge to have a look at your riding. PTT ditto what has already been said, follow any guidance on preparing your portfolio.
