Hello all..

I was wondering about other people without transport aswell as those with!

If you have transport, do you give anyone lifts?...why/why not?

If you dont have transport, do you get lifts from anyone? Do you get to go out much?

And...those who dont have transport but do event..are there any of you?!

Added a poll..for good measure!

Don't give lifts - box carries two horses, we have two horses so no more room for any extras! Lol. Have done in the past though in previous wagons.

It's all a bit trickier giving lifts these days anyway what with new VOSA rules etc - you can't do it for hire or reward unless you have an operators licence. Back in the day people would contribute towards fuel etc. Not sure whether you can still get away with that so much these days.

I have a trailer but nothing to pull it so i put no to own transport.
I got lifts from a friend last year but she will not have any space this year

I will be going to the two shows which are in the village but its very unlikely i will be able to get anywhere else unfortunatly.

no transport get lifts from YO and other livery if there is space in the lorry which there usually is! technically they shouldn't as they dont have a certificate that means they can transport other peoples horses, cant remember what its called though!

eta- typo!

I have no transport of my own but have been very fortunate for the last 14 years, as I've kept my horse at a good friend's yard and she has been very generous with her transport. I usually get out once or twice a month - and have been eventing for the last 5 seasons.

This has been wonderful for me, but I have now decided I need my independence so am taking a break from competing in order to save up some money for a box of my own. It is possible to get by on lifts if you know the right people, but as the person cadging the lift, after a while I feel a bit awkward, esp if they won't take any money towards maintenance costs etc.

Sadly I don't have transport.

Can't justify the extra cost or afford my own transport, so don't go anywhere needing wheels!

I have a HB510 and have given lifts to friend's daughter on quite a few occasions.

It would be nice if they contributed to the diesel (the OH puts it in for me, which is very appreciated) but sadly its never been forthcoming and Im too nice to ask.

I have only just got my self a box. Before that I only competed when I could get a lift with a friend, but now I have been out three weekends in a row and it has been brilliant....so much freedom! can pick and choose events I want to go to, brilliant!

Unfortunately I cannot give a lift due to box being 3.5t, adding another horses weight will put me way over the limit!

I have a HB505 and do not give lifts due to the legallity of it.

I am happy to lend my trailer out to people though. I do not charge but expect it to come back in the same condition as they took it.

I dont have my own transport. It would be great if I could get lifts but I hate to rely on other people. My instructor who is a livery on my yard would take me competing with him and his youngster but his lorry is too narrow for my mare! Gutted.

I still do some competing. My yard is hacking distance to Moreton Morrell college so occasionally go there and also do Interdressage so dont need to leave the yard for that.

Sooo wish I could afford my own transport. Tia is so easy to load. Hadnt loaded her for well over a year till yesterday then had to take her to vets and she went straight into a 3.5tonne lorry no troubles.

I have my own transport and happily give lifts, I remember what it was like when I sold one trailer and was waiting for my current one and as long as people are appreciative and don't take the P I'm happy to lift and lay

No, no and no for me!!

I did compete when they were stabled near a couple of comp centres I could hack to, but now I'm not near any at all! I cannot wait to get my own transport, which will hopefully be this summer!

I have a trailer, a single ifor, so can't take lifts! I can only compete when my mum is around as I can't legally tow yet - and Iam not insured on her car!! I took Meg out 3 times last year - but the pony out a few more to local shows.

i had to sell my transport 6 months ago to buy my dream horse, couldnt afford it otherwise, so far i've had lifts when offered, and luckily there is quite alot within an hour hacking distance. i also occasionly hire a box for bigger events. not ideal, but its the sacrifice i had to make!!

I have no transport, on our yard we would hire transport if we wanted to go anywhere ie the whole yard went on a fun ride, however my ned isn't sound so no outings this year!

No, sadly don't have transport. Have got lifts to vet of YO, and to go to other places to hack from friend at old yard. Never had a lift competing, have always hacked to local shows. However now I have the horse to do it, I hope that I'll be able to get lifts with a lovely friend at the yard, who takes people when she has a space.

I always contribute to diesel- it's only polite!! £10 per time, evens out for short or long journeys

I decided at the start of last year that if I was ever gonna compete seriously I needed to do it myself so passed my trailer test & sold my clio to buy a Disco. I still can't afford a trailer but have been very lucky 'cos a few of my friends give me lifts in their trailers or let me borrow their trailers. If I'm using a friends trailer & they are coming with me I always offer to drive & I pay my own petrol as I count the loan of the trailer as more than enough of a favour. I'm always v.v.grateful to friends who lend me their trailer & would always return it mucked out & clean, etc. I do have one friend whose horse has been a problem ride (rearing, etc) & I have schooled/ridden said horse in exchange for the use of the trailer (they offered money or trailer hire so I took trailer hire). If I had my own transport i would be more than happy to give lifts.

Yep. Worked 6 days a week for a yr to save for it.
Would give a small pony a lift if they were any wanting to go to same show, but it's only 3.5 tons and mine's 14.3hh so it would have to be quite small.

I only give lifts to one other person (as they do me favours looking after my horsey).
I also refuse to lend my trailer to anyone after several bad experiences. One person who borrowed it jackknifed it, drove like a loon and brought it back with the elecric cable shredded. Another person who borrowed it left it full of horse muck and then was really huffy when I said NO when they asked to borrow it again. Lesson learned!

I've got a trailer and will give lifts but only to selected people. There are those out there who will take advantage of others generosity, so I don't give them the opportunity.

I don't take money for diesel, but a bacon roll and cup of coffee are often gratefully received

We currently don't have any transport but are looking! Had pony for last three years and done plenty of shows and competitions on him by getting lifts, borrowing a friend's trailer and another friend's lorry.

We've found people are often willing to lend you theirs if they're not using it- especially in exchange for a bottle of wine or box of chocolates!

EDIT- forgot to add that when we use other people's trailers/boxes, we always clean it out afterwards. Once our friends very old lorry died on us, while we were away competing, so we arranged to get it back to her and then paid nearly £100 for a new battery- it was only fair! Also we once shattered the glass in the wing mirror when tucking into the hedge to avoid a big lorry, we also replaced that for her.

I think people on the whole don't mind, but it's really important that you return it in the condition you started with haha!

I got my own transport 18months ago, the sense of freedom is incredible and being able to get out and about and have fun is still a novelty to me!
laugh.gif
I only have a single trailer though, so had to tick "no" to giving others lifts. I think I would consider giving select friends lifts if I had a trailer/lorry with the capacity, but only if they didn't take the mickey by not helping clean it out/contribute to diesel & only if their horse travelled well.

I have a trailer and my friend also has a trailer, we do share if we are going to the same place as it is silly to take two vehicles, but we do it on a rotatonal basis ie I will do one and then she will do one, that way we cover the diesel aspect without actually paying. Another friend (without transport) used to pay my entries!

I have my own 4wd/trailer but don't give lifts to others at present - it may sound selfish but I find that I'm busy enough getting myself to places without worrying about others
ooo.gif
Plus I've never towed 2 together yet and would rather practise with my own first. I do lend both 4wd/trailer out to selected people and would of course take someone in an emergency.

I used to have lifts in the YO's lorry and would always pay diesel money, muck the whole lorry out and help jet wash it every few months.
