Transporting horse from Cyprus to US. Realistic?! Please advice!

Hi, not sure if anyone will still read this but I'm in the same boat trying to get my 21 year old TB to the UK. I've spoken with friends, vets, shipping companies and anyone else I could think of, does anyone have any more info on the Larnaca-Jordan-Heathrow flights? Who does them, how to get in touch, personal experiences? Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi,

I was looking for a way to get my gelding for the last year.

The Larnaca-Amman-Heathrow flight does not exist it seems. People have heard about it, but no one could give me a concrete details of how to get it.
I called Royal Jordanian Airline, they couldn't help.
For now the only way to transport my horse is by sea to Greece, then again by sea to Italy and then by road to Amsterdam or London.
I contacted the equine transportation agent in Greece who is apparently the best to transport horses to/from Cyprus.
It was recommended by international equine transportation companies as well as local people in Cyprus.
Give it a try if you want:

As for me I decided to leave my darling here. Not because of a hell of a trip as mush as of fear that he won't adjust to drastic climate & environment change in his age.
Freezing temperatures, snow and a long time in a stable turned-in won't make him happy I am afraid.

Good luck with your relocation,

Sasha

I live in Cyprus and recently took a decision to move to Connecticut, US for good. I have a 21y.o. TB gelding, who I love dearly and not ready to part with. To move him to US is incredibly challenging. Besides the cost, the long way may just kill him as I've been told. It currently looks like this:
3 days on the ferry from Cyprus to Greece.
3-4 days ground transportation, etc from Greece to Amsterdam or London.
7h flight Schipol or LHR to New York
48h carantine
2h driving to the stables in Connecticut.
The cost is high, the paper work-painful and if after doing all that my TB will not make it I will blame myself till the rest if my life.
He has manageable arthritis and generally healthy. But he never had travelled any long distance, is used to the local weather, food, water, etc.
Please please advice anyone! Shall I do it? Or the risk is too high? I will much appreciate all your thoughts
speak to H&H member QRU she did it a year or so ago but to UK we all followed her story >>>>https://forums-secure.horseandhound.co.uk/showthread.php?622734-Rico-s-Big-Adventure

I would never leave my horse behind, one of my livery's moved h9orse from Bermuda to UK

Thanks for the info Sasha, I know same here - everyone seemed to know about this flight over there but haven't been able to find anything myself! I have spoken to Yiannis who was very helpful, but after speaking to a vet I'm back to worrying about the trip being too long. She did suggest getting him to Greece on the ferry and then trying to get him a flight from there which is what I'm looking into now.

Sorry you have to leave him behind in the end, I did as well and know the feeling. It does sound like you're doing the right thing for him though, lots of luck with your relocation too!

Surely if you get him to Greece it will be a lot cheaper to get him to uk overland there are lots of transporters who travel all over europe. For example http://www.eta.uk.com/ who actually list cyprus on their website.
From personal experience I can recommend them highly as they have done 2 long trips for me in the past.

yeah he can go overland but it's an awfully long trip and not without risks, flying him over would save him a week or more of travelling and be much better for him. Thanks for the recommendation, I've spoken to several companies including ETA but so far Yiannis seems to be the only one doing the overland trip.
