travellers leave horse dead

I came round a bend near Penrith once. Wide, empty road - so I thought - as I cornered I was face to face with two racing sulkies. the one in my lane took to the verge (mercifully a flat, recently cut, one) but the sulky near as dammit turned over. I was so shaken, not only for the poor horses but because I had my very small son and my three dogs in the car. We could all have been killed. I turned the car and went tearing back, but they had melted away. Probably just as well for me I didn't find them....

Re the particular incident here, we have ALL got to stand up to abuse of this kind. From my limited experience of a holiday in Ireland, the Irish just don't seem to care. I saw donkeys with feet like Aladdin's slippers, scrawny ponies 'raced' on the beach, trekking horses coming in from a two-day trek with awful saddle sores. I protested to the owner of the donkeys, to the trekking establishment AND its feckless tourists who were just disembarking, AND to the Irish SPCA (can't remember its proper title). A fat lot of good it probably did. The owner of the donkeys told me "don't fesh yourself". But it's not just Ireland - indifference, cruelty and love of money are endemic everywhere, and only constant vigilance will curb it.

I watched the video..... some of it anyway, and had to switch it off, made me feel sick to my stomach. Those poor horses, obviously in distress in the middle of all that traffic, and being hammered along like that, just awful. And no-one was paying the slightest attention to the police cars trying to stop them. I sincerely hope the offenders were thoroughly brought to book, but TBH seriously doubt it - as the way to avoid any sort of prosecution, "interference" etc etc is to label oneself as a "person of no fixed abode".

Shocking, truly shocking, and my guess too is that the so-called welfare organisations turn a blind eye and do FA, whereas if it was some poor old lady somewhere who had a pussy cat that was poorly, like the case on here backalong, they'd chuck every flippin book at 'em.

My traddie boy came from this area, Dublin..... I was told that he'd "pulled a cart"......... OK, so, yeah, right. If this is the way horses are treated out there it does explain an awful lot, my poor horse, if this is the sort of background he had.

If the police wished to do anything about this then they would need a ratio of 6 policemen to each person involved. One policeman for each limb, one to sit on them and one to cuff them and charge them. If you do not have this level of police enforcement then they either dissapear or you end up with a riot situation. Once arrested if they are given bail they just dissapear so a large number of prison cells would be required until they were taken to court and then again to keep them in on remand in prison until the court case. Unfortunately the resources are not there to do this and this is why these road races can not be stopped.

The perpetrators of this awfull incident all drove vehicles following this road race and thefore using their video surveylance systems combined with their automatic number plate recognition system the police have it in their power to identify each of the vehicles that was involved with and following the race a nd identify the drivers and passangers. The vehicles should simply be confinscated and the occupants of the vehicles fined.

I too am sickened after seeing that article on the Daily Mail. Poor horse, I sincerely hope justice prevails and those responsible are found. I really hope your horse did not have this type of start in life, its certainly not a good start but fingers crossed he didnt as the majority are not like that. If he did, then Im glad he has gone to a good home with you.

It might sound a bit naive but local Gardai/police will have a fair idea who they are dealing with. Information from another forum says sulkey training on the N8 Rathcormac to Fermoy section of the Cork to Dublin road is a regular occurrence. The death of this horse occurred in Cork recently, not Dublin. The youtube video showing the two sulkeys racing is also in Cork, near Mallow in 2012. I am glad to say 5 men were jailed earlier this year for their part in that infamous sulkey race. Which proves that the law is trying to catch those responsible. That video was just unbelievable, blatant disrespect for the law, for other road users at that early hour of the morning as commuters were making their way to work. Local radio stations were inundated with outraged callers condemning this behavour, so thankfully the majority are appalled and against this activity which is carried out by a minority. This race went on for quite some time on the busy Cork-Limerick road, I know some view the police car as acting irresponsibly in trying to stop the sulkey, but they were fast running out of options. Cars were travelling 4 abreast across a two lane road at rush hour I can only assume they were trying to prevent innocent people being killed in a pileup. There are various versions of that video on youtube and on one, at the very end a very large group of men all connected with the race are pictured. You would need a huge Garda /Police presence for that crowd and unfortunately they knew it and ran amok.

Ha ha, how innocent you are - bless. Half the criminal population drives cars that have no registered keeper and therefore is not on the DVLA database! I once reported a untaxed car parked behind my flat which was clearly being driven (rather than on a SORN) and was told it had no keeper. The perfect vehicle to use in burglery - as many witnesses as you like could take its details after all. Police didn't want to know any more about it. So much for crime prevention.
