So I’ve been working on my Lurchers travel in the car after a pretty awful experience coming back from holiday on October. She has now got a new vice. Barking if I don’t deliver treats at 100 miles an hour! I would like to try the covered crate option but OH says the rear view will be too blocked and she’s a long tall dog. I think she might be cramped. My seats don’t fold flat. What I need is a canvas ‘roof’ on the dog hammock!
 
That's why timing and feel is important if you want to go down that road ;) see how quickly you unwittingly taught a new behaviour?

Older van drivers with no cameras manage just fine, I drove a van with rear windows, with no view out the back because of a crate for a few years and got by with side mirrors and looking over my shoulders.

Yes indeed! I have created quite a monster 🤣. She’s so smart! I wish he was more receptive to trying it at least.

He could buy a car that has a camera and sensors if he’s really worried?
I would say I always reverse into parking spaces. Lifelong advice from my Grandpa ‘always reverse park on arrival, you never know how drunk you might be when you leave’. Different era, different attitude.
 
Another one with a van, although I do have rear windows, visibility is limited. I've towed a ton of trailers and now tow a big but light caravan. I'm a crippled old woman so if I can do it, he can.

Same, but because it's hard to jump or bump start a car facing a wall/a car with no one in it!
 
So another horrendous journey today. Still no answer to how to stop her looking for things to bark at. I really want to try the crate on the back seat or in the boot. It’s a Suzuki vitara. She’s only 20kgs but all legs. Will she be ok folded up in a crate? Daft question I know but she does have stupidly long legs!

Nothing is going to change by doing the same things and expecting a different result. She will be fine in the crate if it is conditioned properly and the very act of being contained/not being able to see things to bark at may solve your problem.

Agreed. I’m so frustrated with him. She can’t help being like she is. I’m going to try the crate. Would you mind helping re conditioning her to it? She’s been in them before. Quite happily but not for a couple of years.
 
The same as I would condition anything, I would just feed her all her meals in there for now, leave her in there for short periods with a bone or stuffed Kong and just build up the duration. I know it's him and not you, but your lives would have been made a lot easier if you'd have started this in October instead of allowing the undesirable behaviour to be reinforced for another three months. I'd love five minutes alone with him, lol!!!

I hear you! She’s a lovely girl bright cheerful very loyal and the cleanest most polite dog in many ways I’ve ever had. Just these few traits that are a problem to us.

You don't have to feel like you have to defend her to me, we all have the best dog, but I do suggest training the OH, lol!!
 
Please dont bite my head off for this, but for shorter journeys could you rig something up to essentially blindfold the dog? A bit like the uveitis goggles for horses but with blacked out lenses - similar to what they use to get them to load/into stocks if desperate. If OH refuses a crate, it would replicate the same effect. Then at least you'd know if it would work before you persue the full argument of swapping to a crate longer term

Ha ha. Funnily I held my head band gently over her eyes today which she wasn’t impressed about. ‘Blindfolding’ her would solve the issue! Not sure it’s possible.

Scout needs those out shooting so he stops worrying about what the others are doing. I thought I’d get him a gimp mask. 😄

Well she’s eagle eyed and looks out the windscreen a lot so wouldn’t stop her completely. Might help though. Thanks.
