I seem to get through a ridiculous amount of treats which cost me a fortune and can't be all that healthy.

So, is there a substitute that I could buy in big bags instead? Something about the size of barley rings would be ideal. Needs to be big enough to feed one at a time (so not small cubes) but not so big that I can only fit a few in my pocket!

Obviously the 'healthier' the better.

Suggestions please, my horse will love you forever :D

Badmington used to do massive high fibre cubes we used to use them in the treat balls as there were about the size of those herb treats! but they've stopped doing them in Robinsons, so not sure if they are still available else where! but the horses use to go mad for them!

I love Equibites can buy a big bag for about £20, very low fat. Dodson & Horrell lady said I can feed up to 10 a day to my big lad.

I also give him simple system Lucienuts which are about the size of teh meadow herb treats you buy but a lot cheaper as are in bulk (basically grass waiting to be rehydrated. :)

They're now Baileys Fibre Plus Nuggets. Excellent size for decahedrons and pockets.

Less than a tenner for 20kg.

Baileys high fibre nuggets are ace for this, I carry pocket loads with me and they don't crumble too badly

They sound perfect! Can they be purchased online?

My last bag of treats lasted about a week and a half at £4 a bag, they were too big too, so £10 for a big bag sounds ideal!

We buy badminton fibre nuggets - they're a grass/hay replacer pellet but the ponies love them, about the size of a big treat and cost around £10 for a 20kg sack

I use barley rings as treats but having put some in his tea which he refused to eat because of the bute, I was worried to see how much they expand if left in liquid (sloppy speedibeet)

Pony nuts are too small, I feed the treats whilst on the horse so they are not practical if I want my fingers to survive :p :D

I use the Baileys ones because they're the same size and shape as pony crack (Spillers treats) and don't feel such a tight wad when I'm having an economy drive. I also like them because the smell of them in the bag reminds me of a high class deli.

Agree with ester- pony nuts, small handful at the end, or in a very flat hand... Not had fingers removed yet!

pah you're too nice, mine doesn't get them until we've finished :p

Lol, we will work towards that target but after having major ridden issues with her I am all for a bit of bribery and reward :o :p Sometimes it's all I can do to stop me from jumping of to give her a cuddle for being so good :o :D

The baileys fibre nuggets managed to let me break a youngster when all other approaches had failed! He loved them, associated them with me getting on and then most importantly stopping when asked. Worth every penny!

I just use Spillers High Fibre cubes. I take a few handfuls out of his dinner every day to use as rewards. No problem feeding them from on top, although I do sometimes forget I have them in an open pocket and sprinkle myself and horse while mounting :D

I did spend a fair while teaching him to take food politely and gently from hands though, and although I only feed two or three at a time he is still very capable of hoovering them up without taking my fingers too ;)

Have used the Badminton/Baileys Fibre Plus too - they are an ideal size (in fact, I actually break them in two, I am that stingy), but stopped feeding them as I wanted to cut out alfalfa.

They were taken over by Baileys! They are now Bailey's complete high fibre nuggets and I use them. My coloured has them as a feed, the others have them as treats! Much cheaper than the 1kg bags!

Black oil sunflower seeds, in 20kg sacks. Get mine from the bird section of big feed stores; cheaper, no cereals/sugars so no matter what special diet your horse may be on, they are digestion/foot-friendly... and the best thing - do not disintegrate in your pocket. I have ruined more than one phone when it has been in a "treat" pocket and got treat-dust where it shouldn't be.

I might take a look at the Baileys high fibre nuggety things then, im one for feeding pony nuts as treats too, but after forgetting they were in my jods pocket as they are quite small, i managed to wash some  they don't wash very well

Very true :D

On the other hand, if you ever experience an awkward lull in the conversation during work meetings, you can always find one or two in a pocket to offer to your colleagues. It always gets a laugh :D:o:D I think every item of clothing I own that has pockets has a couple of fibre nuts...

Mine likes Hilton Herbs - Herballs. Buy them off the internet in bags much, much cheaper than the tubs sold in tack shops

We buy equibites, and theyre great! have all the nutrients and minerals etc in them, so days I'm not riding, they just get a handful of them instead of getting a big feed. you can buy them in tubs or big bags (proper feed bag sized).:)
