Tri-Tec - Is it as good as they say?

Midges about, so I was looking to get something just to spray the ponies undercarriages. The rest of them is covered by their Sweet Itch rugs.
I usually get Absorbine Ultra Shield, but wondering if Tri-Tec 14 is worth the extra cost? It's roughly twice the price for 1ltr of Tri-Tec 14 than 1ltr of Absorbine, but that promises of 'strong polymers' making it long lasting are tempting, but that's only IF it really does last? They claim 10 - 14 days, but I doubt that's under normal circumstances.

Anyone use it who can give me an idea of what to expect or whether it's worth the extra expense?

Is it worth it-yes. Does it last 14 days-not really, not in Scotland at any rate. I have a black pony who is a clegg magnet and it kills them and midges. My other pony who is mildly sweet itchy can live without a fly rug on it. But it’s a nasty chemical and indiscriminate so there’s that. I put it on using a cloth, against the lay of the coat.

Tell me about it, it sucks to have to use them but I've yet to find anything 'natural' that actually provides the level of protection a sweet itch horse needs.
How often would you say you need to reapply to the pair of them? If it's a weekly/twice weekly deal, then it makes the cost a bit easier to take.

I believe it’s the same chemical as Deosect which makes it quite expensive when compared. A bottle of Deosect lasts me all summer so it’s actually very cost effective. I’d say an application lasts about a week.

For under carriages I like Battles Summer Fly Cream. It’s bright yellow though so no good if you have a grey and are going showing.

I buy it when I have money ? it doesn't last 14days, but its the only one that seems to actually do anything. The flies instantly are gone after spraying it. If it was cheaper I'd use it all the time but due to the fact it runs out just as quick as the rest, I tend to alternate with other chemically sprays, absorbine, power phaser etc depending on how flush I am for cash!
The natural stuff unfortunately does nothing for me so total waste of money, at least the above gets a bit of a reaction
Same as above I also cover the teats in cream, they get terrible bites there otherwise

Its got the same chemical as deosect plus another, I dont get on with deosect at all-its just not as effective.

depends on level of rain but weekly/twice weekly-not daily.

YES
it definitely works - not 14 days but every 2/3 depending on rain etc

my horse hated a fly sheet he got too hot

I didn't think it worked very well at all, I wouldn't buy it again. I've started using cattle/sheep pour-on instead and that's the most effective thing I've ever known. I have one horse it raised a lump on, so patch test first if you're going to try it. It's about £1 a dose and lasts about 3 weeks.

Whats the brand @ycbm please? PM if you prefer. Thanks

Spotinor, exact same chemical as the main one which is much more expensive. 250ml bottles available, 10ml a dose. Chelford Farm Supplies does mail order if people aren't near an agricultural merchant.

I ordered some at the back end of last year so have yet to try it but hopefully it works.

contact with the spray kills them-it’s an insecticide. I can literally brush off dead midges from their coats when they wear it and watch cleggs fall off dead, just follow the application instructions. It will also protect against ticks which is useful when they’re on my rough grazing.
Some of the mega DEET stuff (Carr Day and Martin extra strength) works reasonably well against midges but doesn’t last as long- I couldn’t get much tritec during the first lock down and used that instead.

Just be a little careful with it, though I know lots of people use it with no problems. Neither of my other two had any issue with it, but the second application, not the first, brought Joe up in a lump. He does, though, have an extraordinary inflammatory reaction. It went down in a day.

They have been fine with Deosect but one did react to a cheap fly gel years ago so would always do a test first.

I'm in a very midgy and mosquito area, I find the TriTec the best out of anything on the market.
It can last up to 10 days, however if you are having to wash down after riding or it rains a fair bit, then you'll need it more often. I pop a couple of squirts over the top once dry.

What brand is the pour on?

I use it and think it works. Always a bit concerned that it must be quite a harsh chemical but I suppose most of them must be if they work! Yard is now in a very buggy area so it will get thoroughly tested if I use it this year.

Helpful feedback so far! And interesting about the Spotinor @ycbm do you find it helps repel flies, or just kill them when they bite?

This is what I’ve been doing, far easier than doing the spray fight all the time and mine really dislike deosect, one to the point he got really madly dangerous having it applied.

I watch them fly close, then just as they're about to land they change their minds and decide it's not safe. I've not seen one bite, but I have found some bites when I bring them in, so some take the chance, but far fewer than with anything else I've ever used. I'm not in a high fly area, I don't know how it will work when I'm down on the plain, but I know lots of other people use it. Do check my warnings above, I have one I can't put it on.

Having had horses with sweetitch for years, I've tried EVERYTHING, including tritec. The only thing that works at all for midges is Biteback. Tritec is very harsh, very chemical-y and not particularly effective against midges. Biteback is environmentally inert and I've never had a horse react to it. A couple of my horses had bad skin burns and peeling with the tritec.
