I’m looking for recommendations for somewhere to send my tricky mare. I’ve had her 6 months now and she came to me in a bit of a sorry state, underweight and genuinely quite fearful of life, however she was backed late 2020.

She’s a just 5 y/o, ISH. I gave her 3 months off to settle and gain condition and then re started her slowly. She took everything in her stride and was being a star. Then 4 weeks on she reared vertically and had me off on concrete, which put me in hospital unfortunately. She is great to lunge, long line, lean on etc and shows no silly reactions to any of that.

She immediately went to the vets for a work up and has had every inch of her xrayed, which is all unremarkable. She’s also had her teeth checked and her ovaries scanned, which are both fine. I had her scoped for ulcers and she came back with grade 3 ulcers, which are now clear on rescope and only required gastroguard to treat.

I thought that the rearing episode was perhaps a one off as she had only done it that once with me on her but since then she has developed a bit of an attitude and mostly goes up when she’s saying no, for example when she’s taken away from her friends to be lunged, she stands on her back legs and then goes forwards and works fine. It’s almost like the rearing is her saying NO and then she gives in and accepts.

I’m looking to either to send her to someone who can perhaps help work her through this and re back her again, but I don’t want her going to just anyone as I don’t believe she is a horse who can be bullied into anything. Or alternatively someone who would be willing to come to me directly.

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who restarts youngsters with an interest in the behavioural aspect too?

She is a genuinely nice horse and she has blossomed these last few months so I don’t want to give up on her just yet. She has had a rough life to start off with and it’s nice to see her so content but she does need a job with her being young, if possible.

I did contact Will Hunt but have since heard some negative reviews, I’m also aware of Jason Webb & Sophie Seymour if anyone has any comments on those.

I am fully aware of the dangers of rearers and if it does turn out she’s not suitable to be ridden away then she will just live out her days with me.

Thanks in advance ?

I read this thinking it sounds like the sort that Sophie Seymour is good with.
I wouldn't choose Will Hunt, one of mine went to him before I bought her and I wouldn't have described her as exactly well adjusted.

Hope it doesn't turn into a slanging match against Jay. There are plenty of other threads OP can search as to whether he would be suitable.

I’d like to avoid a slanging match too if possible haha, I’m sure Jay works wonders with some horses but for this mare of mine I need someone with a more sensitive touch, but thank you for your suggestion?

I agree there are probably more suitable people. Sophie looks fantastic. Guido ( the chap that goes to olympia with his horses, can never spell his surname) sorted a really bad mounting issue out for a friend.

joe midgley is really lovely. He is very calm and kind and would be ideal, I think he has a long wait list though.
am considering booking him to break my foal in four years now ! And he is other end of country to me !

OP. We’re do you live ? I sent my tricky mare away. To be backed And have been very impressed. Daily updates. Went over to ride her too.

Jay Johnson has been discussed on here before at length.. I'm sure a quick search will bring the thread back up.

Since this thread has derailed anyway... what reasons could you possibly have for recommending him given that you are aware of the threads and his actions?

He is as far from a horseman as one could be. He has zero redeeming skills other than dressing like a hockey player and playing at being a bronc rider.

The bull and bronc riders I know have more horsemanship skills (& empathy) in one finger than he has in his whole body. Staying on distressed horses isnt a horsemanship skill. Working with horses so that they dont become that distressed (after full veterinary and tack checks) is horsemanship.

It blows my tiny mind that anyone would go out of their way to recommend scrud like him ???

TPO having read the thread about this dreadful man I am in total agreement with you. When I saw the picture of him on the bucking horse I remember reading about him. Dreadful man, needs drumming out!
