So I’m having trouble with trot to canter transitions in the school.

She will basically put her ears back and swish her tail. The actual canter is nice although she loses momentum if we are just doing flatwork. This is a lot less apparent when schooling in the field or out on hacks.

Is this likely to be an issue with her saddle being too wide? I’ve had the feeling it’s too wide but can’t get the saddler out until May.

She’s currently undergoing treatment for ulcers so could it also be ulcers?

I wouldn’t ride if I knew the saddle didn’t fit right. Just to take extra precautions, to make sure she’s not in pain. Hopefully she gets better at the transitions soon. Good luck ?x

Really could be both of those things. If she's being actively treated for ulcers I would step down on the work. If the saddle is too wide you may be able to get by with a sheepskin half pad with or without shims. Can you send photos to your saddle fitter? Maybe they can help you remotely and give you a temporary solution until they can be there in person.

Is she actively being treated for ulcers or just being managed to prevent. If actively treating for ulcers then I’m guessing vet is involved already and you should speak to them about the plan for riding etc. Otherwise it could be anything really, a schooling issue, rider issue, tack problem, vet problem. I’d start trying to eliminate them one by one, do you have an instructor/trainer you can ask advice from?
