Troy has to have an operation

I had the vet up this morning because his little willy was still swollen.

And it is bad news... his willy is basically too big for the opening so it can not drop down. It is apparently quite rare (aren't my problems always!) and he has to be put under general anaesthetic to have it snipped a little bit.

I am in absolute pieces to be honest... it is such a big thing putting such a young animal under a general. The actual operation itself is quite straight forwards I believe.

Has anyone else known of any foals that have had to have this done?

Poor Troy!

Hope it all goes well

Poor troy, I am sure everything will work out for the best.
Out of interest (and please bear in mind I know nothing about this sort of op), if the procedure is simple what would be the possibility of doing it standing with the horse heavily sedated and lots of local?

Aww Becki, I'm sorry about this; poor little guy....poor you!

I haven't heard of this before sorry, so have no experience of it. Fingers crossed that everything goes well for him and that Hannah doesn't get too upset about it all.

........and people think it is a breeze this breeding lark!

I'm glad horsegroupie informed you last night how serious it can be[I know she was really upset by the replies she got about her horses willy and I hope anyone who posted apologized as she had to have him pts]
I am sure you would have got the vet anyway. There is so much sad news at the moment and I hope all goes well.It is not straight forward breeding horses and sometimes it is the ones that look after them best that have the bad things happen.
Hope it all goes well

I know it is easy to say, but dont worry too much. I had a day old filly operated on for entropio years ago & she was fine. There is always a risk when they go under, but your vet should know what they are doing. Good luck

Good Luck I have my fingers crossed! I haven't had this operation done before but I have had a foal have 2 operations under general and he came out fine, thing is I wouldn't have put him through the operations if they had told me at the start that the joint ill he had had already infected the bone, after the second operation didn't work they pulled out his original xrays and said unfortunately the operations haven't worked because the joint ill has already effected the bone as you can see here on his xrays we took when he was admitted! Needless to say I have never let another horse of mine go to that particular Veterinary Hospital! But what I trying to say is if they say the op is fairly straight forward, then the bit to worry about is the general and my foal went under twice and came out fine from it, its a risk but you have to do whats best for him - Good Luck!

Aw, I do hope the little fella comes through this OK, which I'm sure he will. YOu have to think positive thoughts hun or you'll drive yourself insane.

Thinking of you and the little guy

Thanks Carthorse. No they didn't but I think they will think twice before taking the mick in the future now they know how serious these things can be!

Good Luck Becki, I have my fingers crossed for Troy!

Oh poor you and poor Troy. Glad to hear he is being fixed. I'm sure he will be fine. I know its a worry 6mths later you may have him cut and would nt think twice about it... The vets know what they are doing.. Good luck, keep us posted, love hearing about Troy. good luck..

Oh no, poor little man

I'm sure he'll be fine, especially as its a simple procedure. Just let us know when the famous HHO positive vibes are needed...

Oh poor little (or not in this case) man.

Sounds like the vet's are confident that's it's simple to sort out so I am sending good vibes to Troy just to be safe.

Let us know how it goes.

Sending huge Good Luck wishes from over here, I hope everything goes smoothly and that he'll be fit and well again very soon.

oh dear - i'm sorry to hear he's got to have an op, but i'm also v pleased you did get hte vet out esp after the other poster who wasn't as lucky with her boy.

i'm sure troy will be OK, and hope too Hannah doesn't get too upset by him not being there for a while.

Good Luck and as always keep us informed.

Hannah is going to be sedated when she gets to the vets. I am going to let someone else handle Troy and I will stay close by to Hannah... she is my absolute baby, and she is much happier when I am there with her. Not sure whether I am going to be there when they are operating, I think it might be best if I stay away.
