My wee welsh sec A mare has had to have a huge chunk of her hoof wall removed today as she was hopping lame, mud had tracked and compacted about a good inch and a half up the wall, vet took away a good chunk of wall and dug as much of the stones and mud out, and we have tubbed her hoof and poulticed it. He has a feeling it is abscessed and will track up rather than down. she is in for the next 4-5 days being hot poulticed but wondered what is best to do to turn her out after this period, he said to use a protective boot and i looked at the hoofeeze boots but with all the mud its defo going to be sucked off. Ive found some latex footskins on ebay and wondered if anyone had tried them before or if they are even intended for turnout?

any suggestions?

Thanks Ang x

If the Hoof Eaze boot you have seen is the same one that I have (thick rubber base with neoprene top and straps that cross and velcro) I never had a problem with mud and stuff pulling it off. If its the same type they are about £50 from the vet. I used one for months and never lost it in the field.

Bit cheaper here!

Just looked at the latex things....I dont reckon they would last five minutes to be honest!

I wrapped mine with baby nappy, vet wrap and Duck tape or similar. Had to do it fresh every morning and it got pretty tattered during the day, I think I had to take most of it off in the evening and put on just the nappy and vet wrap in the stable and re do it before turn out.

I was buying vetwrap off ebay and got through several rolls of duck tape. I vowed that if it happened again I would look into buying some sort of boot as it was about 6 weeks before the foot had healed enough to be turned out with just cotton wool in the hole.
My horse just went straight through those canvas bag things, and he didn't even have a metal shoe on.

I am in a similar position with my horse at the moment. I've just bought an 'eqwelli' and so far so good! He's only been out in it for 1 day but had no problems at all. His field is quite muddy and it didn't get sucked off.

The website is http://www.eqwelli.co.uk and it's not too expensive - I got the medium size for £35.

Thanks for all the advice..got some nappies and silver waterproof tape for tomorrow . Going to order one of those Eqwelli's too, they look just the job! cello-song Can i ask what size pony/horse the medium is fitting?? ...luckily not too much mud in NE scotland just now but lots of snow!!!

Thanks again, Ang x

I've got some of the footskins for tubbing. They work well for that, but they really wouldn't last 5 mins to turn out in. They might work though if you were using them as a layer, for instance dressing then footskin then bandage then gaffa tape. Might just keep the whole thing a little more waterproof.

Little vet wrap to keep the poltice on them lots of duct tape. If you're careful you can cut the boot off in such a way that you can reuse it - it then just thicker and stronger with every use and extra tape used.

You don't need to keep the foot dry, just clean to stop the mud getting in the hole.

Once it's healed have a look at Keratex hoof putty to fill the hole up to stop it refilling with mum.
