Two Police horses attacked by dog and one horse injured

Good god, I’m watching this getting very teary. The non action of the owner is shocking. I hope the horse isn’t too badly injured and thank goodness the rider wasn’t hurt. I hope they throw the book at the owner, not just because they allowed their dog to endanger the life of a police officer but for every horse rider. The owner needs a ban from owning dogs, why the hell wasn’t it on a lead. Makes so so sad and so furious. 😢
 
It’s headlines because it was a police horse, but this is the sort of thing normal horse riders have to deal with regularly. I hope they prosecute the owner and destroy the dog. I’m sure the horse must be injured and I hope it recovers quickly.

This happened to me once, I was leading, not riding and it was a JRT. It didn’t stop until my horse kicked it. I’ve no idea if the dog lived, but it didn’t look good :(
 
This has got attention not just because it's Police horses but because the video exists. I'm a huge dog lover but I'm coming around to the notion that it's time for all dogs in public places to be muzzled by law. I know that means that the majority responsible owners will be penalised and yet again the minority cause the majority to suffer but we cannot go on like this.

Hope the horse makes a good recovery and is not too traumatised to be unsafe to continue as a police horse. Thank goodness it wasn't a person this time - it brings back the story of the woman dog-minder who died.
 
That is a terrifying video! Poor horses, poor riders and door passers by that were trying to help but obviously worried for their safety from the dog and the horse. Having been attacked by a (only small) dog on while riding this week, I'm feeling particularly worried. In our case the dog left after after being kicked a couple of times but I did wonder if I was going to come off at one point and that could have been a disaster all round (loose horse chased by a dog).
 
That has me feel sick and cry watching it. WTF! I really hope the owner is given the highest possible punishment but the dog looks as if it is the type to just go into the zone and keep attacking - it needs PTS. Those poor poor horses and what a terrifying experience for the riders.
 
That poor horse. The way it was standing with its head low after the rider got off, just looked so stressed and shocked. Sincerely hope its alright. I would like to think owner is severely punished but will probably be a hero in his world!
 
that was such a horrible watch. It makes me so angry that any idiot can own dogs and allow them to be such a danger to others. Those passer-by’s were very brave to try and help. Just shocking and sickening.
 
I really need to stop reading the Daily Fail as that's two equine stories in a day that have me raging.
Absolutely horrific attack on this poor police horse - I just pray it will be ok and the rider too, what a horrendous experience for all involved.
WHY do so many people have dogs and not seem to know much about them as a species, their potential instincts?

My first horse was attacked by a Staffie on what was classed as public wasteland. The video of the police horses being attacked is very triggering and brings back horrific memories. In my case I had to jump off and hold Biggles as he was threatening to take off as the staffie kept biting him. It was launching at his throat and his tail. In the end the residents whose houses backed onto the wasteland came out to see what was going on, one had a shovel to beat the dog off. My horse got bitten on the flank and drew blood and in the end the dog ended up falling between his legs and my horse kicked him.

The owner of the dog was threatening to sue me for lack of control over my 650KG WB but I was very lucky I hung onto him in the first place given the gravity of the situation.


I later reported the incident to the police and they told me in no uncertain terms that if I ever saw the dog again I was to ring 999 and they would be out to investigate.

It was totally terrifying and even now I am not good if dogs start running in my horses direction.

This is a break stick for the situation you describe and will separate two dogs. You use it between the canine teeth in a leverage action although in desperation I might be tempted to use it in another fashion if it were my dog under attack.

My friends labrador was recently attacked in a park by an XL bully. It was acutally on a lead but the bloke walking it couldn't hold it. Since the attack she has discovered that it has attacked other dogs in the area in the past. Reported to police and then a week later it's nearly killed a dalmation. Sick of hearing that it's not the dogs it's how they are raised. I agree Bullys can be nice pets if well managed but lets face it they are increasingly owned by idiots and not controlled and innocent bystanders suffer for it. Dogs of this type need regulating and only allowed to be kept my responsible owners!
 
If anyone can get a prosecution for their horse being attacked by an out of control dog, you’d hope it’d be the police. Fingers crossed there are serious legal repercussions for the owner.

On a separate note, the article states that the owner did nothing but, to my eyes, he was trying to get the dog back but was too cowardly/unknowledgeable to actually get it. Alongside the other stories of recent dog attacks, it makes me think that classes should be available on what to do to break up a dog fight, or stop an attack on a dog/human/horse.

Since my dogs were attacked in the road by 2 loose GSDs, and only saved by a passing motorist who grabbed a wheel wrench out of his boot and beat the lead GSD over the head with it, I have carried a heavy handled walking stick with me and have used it. But the majority of people don't leave home expecting to have to break up a fight or stop an attack, and doing it bare handed is not a great idea. If dog owners actually understood what "under control" means, it would be the best place to start.

I think the issue with the owner was that he was unused to horses. We forget how big horses are but to the average joe bloggs who has probably never had any dealing with them they can seem very large and frightening. So to try and recover a dog when its running around an unpredictable 3/4 of a tonne horse is probably quite daunting.

I'm not sure I would try and do the equivalent and recover my dog from an out of control elephant. However, I'd have the intelligence not to let my dog off lead near a horse if I knew it was not used to them so wouldn't ever ben i that situation.

i agree about classes, that is a really good idea Stangs.

This, absolutely (the bit I've put in bold).

If this case doesn't result in a prosecution then I don't think I'll have any faith left in the system; if someone can get away with letting their dog attack the police then what deterrent is there to anyone else? I hope the press reports on whether the police take action or not.

I said exactly this to a colleague when they showed me the article. It shouldn't be the way but I guess we can just hope that because of this more will be put in place to help those of us that have to go through it. what that may be I have no idea!
