The ironic thing for me is that I find far more time with other people's horses because I'm paid to do them, my poor boys are always dragged about on the brink of darkness, its a good job thier mummy loves them

[/ QUOTE ]

Same. But then if I didn't I would be able to afford to keep my horses.

Does anyone else use bailer twine for a sweat scraper? My yard friends laughed the first time I did it, then looked on in admiration at that worthless bit of string as it got more wet off than their scrapers did
grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Yep - I do that too - but the sprog still went out and bought a useless bit of purple plastic thinking it would be better, which of course it's not!

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry to be non twinist, but I use a schooling whip for sweat scraping..

Well you know what Sarah, they might drag us all over the place, and they might not be quite as tubby as your average Rockwood horses, but they are always the two horses at the end of a day still towing you into the fences, you can't get fairer than that!

Very true!!

The good thing with our boys is that no one will ever ask us to do anything responsible - look after kids, open gates etc., so alls good I think!

although apparently badger isn't fit enough because he doesn't get ridden 6 times a week - how can i expect him to perform??!

OK. here is the number for the ILPH and the Donkey Sanctuary 00000 000000 and 01111 111111...start dialling........

our horses and donks are not stabled, they get any old rug - but not until November at the earliest, they are not ridden from one week to the next, not groomed every day, don't get hard feed, rarely get hay or hayledge...........but...........a surprise inspection from the Doneky Sanctuary and a visit from my vet who said they are the friendliest, happiest donks he has ever seen......well, what can I say..........SHOOT ME!!
tongue.gif

Here here to OP!

Fed up with doing this and that to please others when my horses are perfectly happy and healthy, and have not seen vet in years unlike those "who did it all right and mollycuddled them!!"

When we moved to our new house I purposely moved my lot (2 minis and 3 biggies) to yard that I rent on my own, its bliss I tell you!!

No-one's opinions etc etc, my horses have to fit in with me I'm afraid, if they are an hour or two late because i am late from work they will live!

I work full time, have an 8 year old daughter and responsible managerial job at a local company, sometimes time and money dictate that their shoes may have to wait an extra week, or they will have to go in for a night with turnout rugs on because i am off at 6am the following morning to another area of the country!

I have a 27 year old healthy gelding who has just qualified for the ollie townend final in a few weeks, a 7 year old ID on loan who is doing really well, an ex pointer who is a field ornament but currently happy being lazy and two miniatures who make me smile.

If I kept them in livery which would be unlikely with my lot! - I cannot begin to imagine what people would say about my methods!!

My minis travel in a converted transit van, my 27 year old doesnt like travel boots and travels therefore naked OMG! - they rarely get their feet picked until the weekend in the winter - hell I must be reported instantly!

Oh and sometimes........I put a headcollar on them instead of directly them into their stables from the field!

Oh lest we not forget we do loads of trotting on the road hunting, with excited canters which are unavoidable sometimes, and I do compete or hunt most weekends, and dont ride at all in the week (although have a lady who will ride 3 times a week and spread it between my 2 riding horses), my horses are kept on hills, and keep damn fit on their own, doing a 2 minute round at a steady or fast canter is not going to kill them.

None of them have ever been lame or sick or sorry ONCE! (watch the vets bills roll in now I have said that!!).

Bit like the phrase i like to use when i turn up a bit tatty to a show or xc.......in an old box.....handsome is as handsome does, unless I am showing then why waste my energy> we are safe, courteous, but shiny, no, my boots rarely get cleaned unless showing I find the dried mud and sweat helps my grip

One of my dad phrases - "handsome is as handsome does"!

Although I have a post in the hunting section saying it pisses me off when people are scruffy so don't want to contradict myself!

I'm not mega clean or tidy, but make sure i look respectable for stuff - even if I do have a few rips here and there and the odd shaving in my plaits from the night before!

Mine live out all year round, only see a brush where the tack touches, have been known to go three weeks without being ridden, get feed and hay sometimes, and only the old brood mare has a rug on at the moment. They get their feet picked out occasionally! I don't skimp on farrier, worming etc though.

One is even chase clipped and not rugged, and I am not going to rug the foal. I own a tack shop/feedstore, and used to bring in at night when in livery, but now we have our own field, it's great to have made the choice to have them all out, they love it, and are happy in their herd life.

The only thing I miss about not having them in at night is the chance to faff around with them after work, with the lights on in the stables. We don't have lights, just a big torch - it's not the same!

Quick reply.

Why are so many getting their knickers in a twist?

Who has ever said that if you don't have the latest rugs you aren't looking after your horse? If they had and I missed that post would anyone really give a toss?

Everyone has their own individual way of looking after their horses. You are never going to please everyone but so long as your horse/s are thriving on what you do it is no one else's business anyway.

Buy a head torch (the LED blue lighty ones) so you can do them in the field without having to hold a torch. Aside from believing that all of my horses have no eyes in the winter, it works brilliantly.
