Hi, I am interested in viewing a 5 year old but it is about an hour away. The owner has said that when he was a foal he had umbilical hernia but had it removed does any one know any risks that could occur later in his life or is it just a simple procedure that he can be treated as normal?
As he is a liver chestnut would there also be a scar that would be noticeable if I ever sold him would it devalue him?
Thanks.

My foal had an umbilical hernia and had it removed, all healed fine and unless you are climbing under her tummy you cant see anything, there is a slightly raised line under there that I only ever see when I clip her, because I know it is there, so no-one would see it.

I am not aware of any future problems this can cause, vet never suggested any? She's 9 this year and never had any problems.

Mine had this op as a youngster can't recall how old but under 2, all healed fine and she is now 18 years old and it's never caused a problem and nobody has ever noticed.

it is probably of no relevance whatsoever but i personally had an umbilical hernia when i was born.
Other than not having a belly button it doesn't affect me at all.... oooh apart from i dont get belly button fluff :)

sorry its not helpful i know, but i like to share ;)
