I want to get Digby a new rug to have on both under his turnout rug and under his stable rug. At the moment he has a really lovely rug its kinda fleecy on the inside but just a normal woven type fabric on the outside (can not really describe it very well) it is cosy but not thick and bulky.

The worst thing is it really doesnt fit him and is slipping back so badly and pulling down on his chest and withers so want something to replace it.

At the moment he has a heavy turnout on during the day and that rug and in the stable he has that rug, a single duvet cover and a middle stable rug. When i re-clip he will have a fitted duvet type under rug on day and night as well.

ideally it needs to be quite hard wearing but warm and cosy without being overly thick.

Any suggestions?

im am very loathed to use fleeces other than as a cooler, they tend to pull back and can cause bad backs due to the tension the cause! I have seen a little horse very badly scard due to a fleece slipping back when left on overnight!

I think the stable rug he uses on top is a Amigo one.

I don't like using fleeces either but he needs to wear something under his main rug.

What else do you suggest.

I wouldn't use a fleece either due to them slipping back - I found this out recently.

I've got a Mark Todd under rug which is 200g and not too thick though I'm guessing an Amigo stable rug would do the same job - the medium Insulator is 150g and the heavy is 300g and I wouldn't class either as too thick.

I have an underrug thats shiny (nylon I guess) on both sides so it doesn't stick to him or the outer-rug. It doesn't have a make on it though. I tried a WB jasper lite but being cotton lined it slipped back, and that was just in the stable

Id advise against ever using fleeces as under-rugs. I did this for years over the winter to keep the inside of their turnout rugs clean, but suddenly last month after a particularily heavy period of rain for 3 days (my horses live out) - I found the fleece rug had gotten wet somehow and then pulled so far back and up that the breast strap was imbedded in his chest. It was truly awful. I always glance at their rugs daily etc. but hadnt noticed this as his turnout over the top was covering it. He had a massive swelling under his neck of puss (he'd got mud in it) and a large chunk of skin which had been rubbed off. Was in tears when I found it! Thankfully as soon as I removed the rug and seriously cleaned it up, the next day the puss had drained and its healing well now. But I will never ever use an under-rug ever again! Id used the fleece loads of times before and never had a problem.

Try an Amigo Insulator as an under rug as the medium weight ones are only 150g. I use one and have been very impressed. It doesnt slip or rub and keeps hime nice and snug. You can get the ones with attachments for a hood now so I have the full neck one.
I got mine from here www.5starsaddlery.com

Thanks, i don't like using a fleece the one i have been using is not a fleece at all much thicker its just the underside thats fleecy. It is really hard to describe- it would be perfect but its at least 2 sizes too big.

I shall have a look.

He already has a tick duvet under rug with full neck but until i re-clip him its too hot to have that on underneath his main rugs, but too chilly without a little extra something!

I've got a Weatherbeeta under rug with neck which is lovely and fits very well. Tend to use that at night, and use a lightweight stable rug for under his T/O rug. Only do it this way as 2 neck covers was just a bit too warm for him!
