Unneccessary Rug Buyers Anonymous...

I'm now trying to count up how many rugs I have - I don't think I'm as bad as you lot. Off the top of my head, I have:

1x MW/HW turnout with neck
1x LW turnout
1x MW stable rug with neck
1x MW stable rug without neck
1x Newmarket fleece
1x Fleece with neck
1x Thick Coolex fleece
1x Coolex exercise sheet
1x Walker rug
1x Comfort Zone show fleece
1x Stable sheet
1x Fly rug
1x Full neck under rug

That's thirteen! I shall have to buy another immediately so I don't have an unlucky number of rugs, but I don't think that's too many. My real problem is saddle cloths and bandages - almost all of which are unused because I'm keeping them for best.

If any of you rug addicts want to help combat your addiction, apparently giving the ones that aren't necessary away to a charity or other worthy cause can help (a la confessions of a shopaholic).

Please leave all donations on the doorstep!

*eagerly awaits some shiny new rugs to be delivered* :D :D :D

You don't have too many rugs/headcollars/buckets. You have too few ponies. At least that is my excuse for having so many of everything, something might need it.

lol. When I buy something that turns out to be too big I used to sell it on but now I keep it as the two year old will need more things when he gets broken in

My whole place is an advert for keeping things 'just in case'

Charity is a really good idea :)

I have also used extra leadropes to secure gates when the proper lock has been damaged. And tub trugs are hard to resist, all the bright colours..!

I know an HHO member whose name I won't mention, but I notice she has kept away from this thread. She has 4 horses and 200... yes two hundred... rugs!! She actually worried the other week because one got torn and has entered competitions with rugs as prizes! I must point this thread out to her and get her to confess ;)

Ah but that is only 50 rugs per horse, by the time you divide that into the different types of rug she probably only has one or two of each. So not enough spares.

haha! so glad it's not just me... got my mare in feb and she now has full range of outdoor and stable rugs going up in 100g increments from none to 400_ wouldn't be so bad if she actually needed them as still out in a rain sheet!! - but i have seen a really nice one....

like them to look new and so once they are mucky they get hosed off and put in the washing machine with nicwax.

what is this nicwax wagtail?

since there are so many rug experts (or over rugged experets!) on this thread, can someone tell me if i need to do something awful like wash a turnout rug instead of doing the sensible thing of throwing it to the back of the tack room and buying a new one- can i just wash it either in a machine or hose it down BUT will i then lose itrs waterproof ness and do i have to re spray it with something to make it weatherproof agaain?

OR- i could just use it as an excuse to buy a new one after all? ;)

I use an extra large tub trug and some medicated horse shampoo to wash mine by hand, and then dry them by hanging them out in the sun over a wall. Which means they don't get washed this time of year.

Is any other 'Rug addict' looking at other lists, thinking .... "Hmmmm I don't have one of them..!" Maybe my boy needs one.... :)

And my excuse for having 2 the same is that it was the same price to buy new as get washed and re-proofed.. So....

Who am I kidding... :) I am a Rug Addict... and still don't have enough..! I have enough to share if my friends are short of a rug or 3..!

All these rugs and all he has on is a L/W Rambo Optimo

How rude! lol

I am ashamed to say I have well over 100, of which at least 50 are turnouts! Frightening, especially if I add up how much I must have spent!. Even a conservative average of £60 per rug means I have spent £6k on rugs! Could get a jolly nice horse for that. Of my 11 horses, only 7 are rugged. So that's just under £1 k of rugs each. I need help.

Big horse had 62 rugs at one point, she's down to about 50 now. The Shetlands already have 10 between them, that is only for two shets though.

I am so happy, other rug addicts!!!!! Rug Addicts of the world unite....

I dare not go look in the tack room but Jay has (off the top of my head)...

2 x Lightweight fly sheets (one spare in packet).
1 X Sweet Itch Hoodie.
2 X reasonable fly sheets (between the other two in quality).
2 X 50/50 rugs (half waterproof/ half fly sheet for those warmer wet days).
1 X lightweight NZ.
1 X Rambo Wug Mid weight.
1 X Heavy fixed neck rug.

Stable rugs.....
about 4 summer sheets.
2 X lightweight quilts (one is ripped)
1 X Mid weight quilt
1 X Heavy Quilt.
1 X Mid weight with hood.
1 X under quilt with hood.

Travel rugs....
1 X Magnet rug.
1 X Thermatex
1 X Coolex
4 X fleece
2 X sweat rugs

Exercise...
1 X fluorescent exercise rug
1 X blue Exercise rug
1 X Walker rug.

Others...
1 X wool rug that does not fit.
1 X fly sheet that does not fit.

That is 30, and I now realise reading the other posts that this is totally normal. :-)

(I have a few others from other horses that are the wrong size for this one, but surely they don't count?).

PS - OOops edited- the tally is 34 - I had a miscount
Oh, an as for numnahs.....I dare not say!

I have had horse for just over a year. He came with nothing which was an awful excuse to go shopping. He now has 55 (and every single one is navy as I have horrific OCD) rugs. The scary part is that they all get used!

I did recently total up his whole wardrobe and was shocked at the amount I have spent so have vowed to cut back. Although indulging in horse health goodies last week was a dark period of relapse.
