oh and people who have ponys and keep then clipped and trimmed and spotless all winter when they dont ride more then once a week and dont show. why cant animals be animals. fair enough if they are doing a job but they are pets.
There's a woman on my yard who tried to get her horse to stand still while she ineptly flops herself on from the mounting block (no wonder he tries to walk away) anyway she shouted the other day "STAND STILL OR I WILL DO YOUR NOSEBAND UP EVEN TIGHTER".
People who constantly shout at their horses really irritate me - all this "show them who is boss" lark with constant "BACK, BACK!!! I SAID BACK!!!" - the horses become immune to it after a while and it doesn't cure whatever they were supposed to be doing wrong.
I don't really care what people think, I do what I think is best for my horses. Many of the things that some think is unnecessary isn't, it's just them that can't be bothered because they're being lazy.
Things that do annoy me though are things that are detremental to the animals health. An example is someone who finishes an hours work in the school, walks their hot sweaty horse back to the stable, takes the tack off, puts them in the stable, gives them their feed & goes home. Gone off the yard within 5-10 mins from finishing riding. This doesn't happen where we are now but used to happen alot at a previous yard.![]()
When a horse has been asked to do a bit of "work" it will get sweaty, also it needs eight/ten minutes walking to cool down and remover lactic acid from the muscles.Am I missing somethingwhy is this [sticking horse in stable five mins after work] detrimental to the horses health? That's an honest question too, I'm new to owning horses so I'd actually like to know.
When a horse has been asked to do a bit of "work" it will get sweaty, also it needs eight/ten minutes walking to cool down and remover lactic acid from the muscles.
When returned to stable after this "cool down", it should be quickly brushed over to remove sweat stains and make it comfortable before rugging up, checking water, then feeding.
People who are obsessed with sweeping up and spend hours picking up every...little...last...microscopic.......teeny weeny.....almost invisible to the naked eye....bit...of ...hay. Or poo. Or feed. What makes me smile about that is that it's really a ploy to not go home and face the boring reality of having to go home and face the washing up and hoovering. Which is totally understandable..
Oh right, Thanks for answeringI actually do give my horse a quick brush if she's been sweating, I didn't know it was something you were supposed to do I just do it automatically, and always cool her down after a ride. Glad I'm not doing anything wrong.

This has turned into rather a judgemental thread...so what if someone else chooses to turn out their horse in a certain way, or put their bed differently from you...doesn't mean your way is right and theirs is wrong. I AM of the fully clipped trimmed and cleaned brigade. Even semi retired mare gets tidied up but my horses my choice! I don't think less of someone who chooses their horse to look more au natural...
People who sweep up till their section is spotless, THEN pick their horses feet out onto the floor, and have to sweep up again, then lug 4 haynets to their spot and have to sweep up again and on and on ad infinitum....oh wait, that's me.
People who manage to make it take a whole hour to muck out ONE stable.....wait...me again.
People who take ages with a dandy brush getting the bits of shavings out of their horses mane and tail, only to put said ned straight back in the stable, where it immediately rolls and gets covered in shavings again....oh...yeah that's me again.
I'm often the first one to arrive at the yard and the last to leave. There are people who do THREE in a third of the time it takes me to do one!! I've only been doing this stuff a month though. Hopefully I'll learn!
On a serious note....do people REALLY not wash their horse's feed things (buckets, stirrers, rolly ball things, etc) after each use??
Putting rugs on fat cobs in 17degree heat. spending hours debating if said cob will be warm enough without his hood. Bringing cob in to change rug to full neck as "it looks a bit cloudy" Hanging about yard waiting for vet on emergency call out for lamanitic cob.
Don't ever come to my yard, you would be horrified! I always groom my horses before riding, they also have their hooves oiled. I would never ride or put my horses to bed with muddy feet.
They are ridden in either white boots and saddle cloths or bandages that match the saddle cloths.
I keep them trimmed up ( trim them every third day ) and they are groomed properly before bed.
My stables are mucked out properly everyday and I like my banks level and the beds swept back so that the edge is straight. I also scrub out my bowls and buckets daily and like the put in the stables straight- hate wonky buckets!
I clean my boots before I ride and fold and put away my rugs every night.
I always keep the area outside my stables swept and tidy.
I clean my tack every other day and put my tack away making sure my numnahs and girths are taken off, I always cross my bridles over to hang them up.
If I go to a show all tack and equipment is cleaned before leaving the show, everything is put away at home, the horses are groomed before leaving the show and the lorry is never put away dirty.
My tools are always hung up in the correct place and I always clean my boots before riding.
Thats how I like things done, if people think that its a waste of time, oh well, its my waste of time!
