Unnecessary stuff that people do on yards

My OH is the King of pointless yard tasks. When I get grumpy I tell him they haven't died yet doing it my way!

TBF I'm unbelievably lazy, why muck out now when you can do it later etc... But my OH would have everything on the yard done and spotless by 7am if he had his way!

We do wash legs off in the winter though, the amount of times we've found cuts under the thick mud that we wouldn't have noticed otherwise. x

Little things people do can annoy me.... but them little things I do probably annoy people! Think everyone just needs some patience.

Luckily I have my own stables so its just me myself and I, and obviously the gruesome twosome... but i bet some people would be pulling their hair out if they see what I do to my two! e.g. turning up the radio and dancing around the stables with them, give way too much treats, speak to them in a baby voice and many more.... as long as its not doing any half leave people be! :D

Oh dear! I am one of those OCD obsessive sweeper up people:eek:

Our yard is one of those court yard types, where the YOs home faces the stables. I think that as a paying guest I should keep the yard tidy, it's their home and I'm damned sure I wouldn't like it if my drive at home was covered with bits of mud and stuff.

I have worked for a couple of different yards over the years and there are a few things i really dont understand why i had to do it....
One was filling haynets, that was all well and good if i was tying them up for the horses but i had to dump them out on the stable floor... It would have been alot easier if i was allowed to tie them up... I was there all day so could keep on eye on them and i would have taken them down before i went home dumping out what ever is left... It used to wreck my head take me well over an hour filling over a hundred haynets for 3 feeds that day by myself...

oh and people who have ponys and keep then clipped and trimmed and spotless all winter when they dont ride more then once a week and dont show. why cant animals be animals. fair enough if they are doing a job but they are pets.

Thats me ! I do it because I like seeing my horse looking 'nice' - doesn't stop her being her horse if I wash her tail or clip her because it makes it much quicker to get her clean on the one day I do ride. I hate riding out on a dirty scruffy horse. This year I actually kept her mane pulled and feathers trimmed and tail / legs washed regularly even I didn't ride for 3 months ( but then she is grey!) why do people who keep poodles as pets keep them trimmed as they do!

And I really enjoy it.

And I have to have a tidy yard even though it's just me at home!

There's a woman on my yard who tried to get her horse to stand still while she ineptly flops herself on from the mounting block (no wonder he tries to walk away) anyway she shouted the other day "STAND STILL OR I WILL DO YOUR NOSEBAND UP EVEN TIGHTER".

LOL, this made me chuckle. Horse are fluent in english don't you know ;)

I'm very much in the mind set of - if you want to do it,..and it isnt hurting the horse, feel free! Not my horse, not my time, so I don't worry. What annoys me more than anything is when people interfere in what YOU are doing! Like when people took it upon themselves to start feeding my pony extras because they thought it needed it when it was on a strict diet as was close to being a ft lami pony!! Really annoyed me! What makes me giggle now is that this said person now has a FAT horse because of their attitude and bad planning which is now on a diet itself. Rolls eyes. If the horse is healthy and happy, leave it and the owner be!

People who constantly shout at their horses really irritate me - all this "show them who is boss" lark with constant "BACK, BACK!!! I SAID BACK!!!" - the horses become immune to it after a while and it doesn't cure whatever they were supposed to be doing wrong.

lol this made me laugh. We had one lady on our yard who was just like that. She used to try and make her horse stand and back up several times in the field before even tying to catch him. Horse got wise in the end and used to bugger off :-)

People who empty the haylage their horse hasn't eaten back near the haylage bale.
Why if your horse won't eat it, should mine ? Put it on the muck heap :)

I don't really care what people think, I do what I think is best for my horses. Many of the things that some think is unnecessary isn't, it's just them that can't be bothered because they're being lazy.

Things that do annoy me though are things that are detremental to the animals health. An example is someone who finishes an hours work in the school, walks their hot sweaty horse back to the stable, takes the tack off, puts them in the stable, gives them their feed & goes home. Gone off the yard within 5-10 mins from finishing riding. This doesn't happen where we are now but used to happen alot at a previous yard. :(

Am I missing something :o why is this detrimental to the horses health? That's an honest question too, I'm new to owning horses so I'd actually like to know.

Lol - I am guilty of ditching my sweaty horse if I'm in a rush, but he gets his hairy dirty grey bottom kicked out into a field, so I feel I'm doing him a favour by leaving him sweaty. Makes the mud stick that little bit better

When a horse has been asked to do a bit of "work" it will get sweaty, also it needs eight/ten minutes walking to cool down and remover lactic acid from the muscles.
When returned to stable after this "cool down", it should be quickly brushed over to remove sweat stains and make it comfortable before rugging up, checking water, then feeding.

I must admit I am one who chatters away to Ned and makes empty (or rather, meaningless) threats XD

"Ned, you get over that jump or you WON'T GET A POLO!!"
"Stop being such an idiot, just stand still!"
"Look, there's nothing scary, it's just a chair!" (After spooking at a garden chair, lol!)

Oh right, Thanks for answering :) I actually do give my horse a quick brush if she's been sweating, I didn't know it was something you were supposed to do I just do it automatically, and always cool her down after a ride. Glad I'm not doing anything wrong. :)

People who are obsessed with sweeping up and spend hours picking up every...little...last...microscopic.......teeny weeny.....almost invisible to the naked eye....bit...of ...hay. Or poo. Or feed. What makes me smile about that is that it's really a ploy to not go home and face the boring reality of having to go home and face the washing up and hoovering. Which is totally understandable..

Oh ... darn it I've been rumbled

My stable is spotless when I've finished mucking out. My house, less so! I only pick up a hoover when it's absolutely necessary (by that I mean I can't see the carpet any more) :D

also "STAND BACK!! YOU ARE NOT HAVING YOUR BUCKET OF FOOD THAT I HAVE PUT RIGHT UNDER YOUR FACE TILL YOU STAND BACK AND SHOW SOME RESPECT!!" I'm *like* why? Did their own human mummies do that do them as children? Just give them the godamned food! How grateful do you want the horse to be?

As a young person I was a groom to international event horses, I had to look after them to the hugest standard, was well trained and those standards have stuck. I even had to soap the leather buckles on show rugs before a show and after and Polish all the metal work! And my house....hmm..I pay someone to do it:-)

Haha..horse won't die if you don't do this dont worry, and you may not feed your horse hard feed!
And Waffles...if i didn't make my big boy wait before I put his feed bowl down (when he is fed) he would soon push me out of the way and become very bargy and rude.

I do that as well Nah! I talk to my horses all the time x

Probably unnecessary but I put my horse's feed in before I get him in and post him into the stable - he probably doesn't appreciate all the effort I have gone to to get it there :D If he gets bargy, I sock him one ;)

This has turned into rather a judgemental thread...so what if someone else chooses to turn out their horse in a certain way, or put their bed differently from you...doesn't mean your way is right and theirs is wrong. I AM of the fully clipped trimmed and cleaned brigade. Even semi retired mare gets tidied up but my horses my choice! I don't think less of someone who chooses their horse to look more au natural...

Don't take it too seriously, I've made a few comments about different stuff but I dont lose sleep over it or consider it a big issue if people do things I wouldnt do, their horse, their way as long as it's not cruel. Im sure most of the other posters feel the same..

When I'm having a thinking moment  I like to take the lead rope and neatly wrap and tie it back into itself, I've had someone ask me before why the hell I bother as it's only going to get undone the following day but it's just something I like to do whilst I tick off the checklist of chores in my head.

Unnecessary stuff? Um, you mean like mucking out, sweeping up, scrubbing feed skips and water buckets and then refilling same, picking out horse's feet, rugging/not rugging, grooming, riding, cleaning tack, washing rugs/numnahs/bandages . . . that sort of thing? ;).

P

Old dear next to me brings her son up and he hoses the concrete outside the stables. So pointless, waste of time, why? The old dear then sweeps for hours. It totally confuses me.

Meanwhile, the horse is left to stand in its own crap all day and ignored most of the time, including when it injures itself (we looked after it).

I waited so long to own my own horse that it's still a novelty doing all the chores - I've had him for 6 years! I'm beginning to think I may possibly have OCD as I can't deviate from my routine. :D

I admit to being a obsessive sweeper and probably take longer mucking out than is needed but I like having nice neat beds I know it gets ruined within 5 minutes of the horses being in but its something I have to do aswell as washing muddy legs and grooming my horse before they go in the stable just to get covered in bedding. But it makes me happy so i will continue to do it :D

People who sweep up till their section is spotless, THEN pick their horses feet out onto the floor, and have to sweep up again, then lug 4 haynets to their spot and have to sweep up again and on and on ad infinitum....oh wait, that's me.

People who manage to make it take a whole hour to muck out ONE stable.....wait...me again.

People who take ages with a dandy brush getting the bits of shavings out of their horses mane and tail, only to put said ned straight back in the stable, where it immediately rolls and gets covered in shavings again....oh...yeah that's me again.

I'm often the first one to arrive at the yard and the last to leave. There are people who do THREE in a third of the time it takes me to do one!! I've only been doing this stuff a month though. Hopefully I'll learn!

On a serious note....do people REALLY not wash their horse's feed things (buckets, stirrers, rolly ball things, etc) after each use??

Love this...:D I'm somewhat lazier myself... :o

Putting rugs on fat cobs in 17degree heat. spending hours debating if said cob will be warm enough without his hood. Bringing cob in to change rug to full neck as "it looks a bit cloudy" Hanging about yard waiting for vet on emergency call out for lamanitic cob.

have a thing against cobs do we? ;)

Don't ever come to my yard, you would be horrified! I always groom my horses before riding, they also have their hooves oiled. I would never ride or put my horses to bed with muddy feet.
They are ridden in either white boots and saddle cloths or bandages that match the saddle cloths.
I keep them trimmed up ( trim them every third day ) and they are groomed properly before bed.
My stables are mucked out properly everyday and I like my banks level and the beds swept back so that the edge is straight. I also scrub out my bowls and buckets daily and like the put in the stables straight- hate wonky buckets!
I clean my boots before I ride and fold and put away my rugs every night.
I always keep the area outside my stables swept and tidy.
I clean my tack every other day and put my tack away making sure my numnahs and girths are taken off, I always cross my bridles over to hang them up.
If I go to a show all tack and equipment is cleaned before leaving the show, everything is put away at home, the horses are groomed before leaving the show and the lorry is never put away dirty.
My tools are always hung up in the correct place and I always clean my boots before riding.
Thats how I like things done, if people think that its a waste of time, oh well, its my waste of time!

^^^me too and I love doing it all.
