Afternoon all :D

After having a peeksie in the hunting forum its got me bussing for winter to hurry up! However some of the pictures featured horses with their tails 'put up' :

And last season a few people had suggested I put my horses up (I regularly spent hours of washing AFTER hunting to get his thick tail looking snowy-white again! ) and I was wondering how you actually plait it/put it up like that?

Also what is your preferred way of making a tail look smart? Put it up, plait it, pull it or brush like mad and leave it down? :p I've noticed a lot of pulled tailsies around, but whenever I walk up to my horses bum with the intention of pulling it and making him look like a smart and presentable young boy, I always chicken out!

Jaffacakes and tea for any replies ;)

I don't do pulled tails because I am lazy and don't show anyway.

My arab was white, he came off the lorry looking white, he left the meets looking white, he came back kind of orangey - usually. I had to leave his tail down because have you seen how utterly stupid an arab looks with his tail tied up when they carry it really high!:rolleyes:

The pictures, tails looked pulled, but plait as per normal, then carry on to the bottom, fold up and secure with electrical tape, lots of colours to choose from and it doesn't rip hair off either.

Some people also knot them, and then fold, depends how much tail you have to stash away, big cobby tails can be quite a challenge, and if you knot them it can sometimes ends up looking as if you are riding a dinosaur with one of those club tails :) Neat and tidy is the way to go, do some experimenting and see what suits you horses best.

Hehehe, I can imagine arabs looking quite funny with a put up tail :D

I just grabbed the picture off Google to show what I meant, but my horses tails aren't pulled so I might have a go at doing one later ;)

I think they look so smart with their tails up (and I do believe I've been lucky enough to ride both of those gorgeous horses in the pic you posted! :D). I put my horse's tail up a couple of times the last time he hunted - it's a bit of a faff to do but looks great and is so much easier than washing when you get home.

I used to have his pulled fairly short so just plaited the rest and taped it up (with red tape, in his case...). Took a bit of practise though!!

Ooooh, lucky! Judging by their smart bottoms i'm guessing they just have been quite nice horses, heheee :D Had a quick go at doing my boys tail just now, i'll snap a quick pic of my attempts :p

i always plait as normal, havenever put one up bt after reading how on here somewhere, i might give it a go on some of the heavier horses we hunt. Might look a little silly on the really fine boned ones!

YM used to plait my mare's (not the grey, the previous one !!) tail for shows, as she is such a great plaiter she could cope with the wriggling and swishing :) and the one time I hunted her I debated long and hard what to do with her tail - she hates mud and I could see her kicking out at it, but I could also see her kicking out if we tried to put it up LOL
In the end I gave up and just lopped a couple of inches off the bottom to keep it out of the worst of the wet. We always kept our 'proper' hunters' tails about hock length anyway as Warwickshire mud is grim :(

hunters look best with a well pulled tail (my thought) and cut shorter as the season progesses. i fully wash mine off when getting home (though i do a quick wash off before loading for home) so washing tail is no big deal. whatever suits you dont think there is a wrong or right,, just be well turned out at the start of the day.

I just leave mine natural and trim the bottom so its down to her fetlock :p I cant bring myself to pull it as if it looks awful then it will take ages to grow and will look like a bog brush and im a whimp :o I like her cute curly, ginger tall ... and i cant plait tails so thats a no no to

One has pulled tail, as he shows, 2 have plaited tails. If they are put up they are stitched as I think putting tape round it looks awful.....sorrry.

I was wondering how you did it without tape/bands...how exactly do you stitch it up? (Any picture how-to's or video tutorials welcome!) ;)
