Following on from this thread - http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=604997 where I had what I considered to be a major breakthrough with my nappy/explosive mare (hadn't managed a hack alone since November without getting off and leading!) I thought I would do a tiny little update.
She had two days off (was lunged but not ridden) so I wasn't sure what to expect when I got back on her today, I wasn't filled with confidence as she napped in hand when I led her out of the drive so not a great start!
I led her down to where I usually get on, mounted, and before I had my other foot in the stirrup she walked on without being asked
(which I know I shouldn't allow but given the circumstances I wasn't going to stop her!)
She walked happily for 5 minutes and then had a tiny nap at what used to be her worse napping point but I was very quick to stop the spin, gave her a smack on the bottom and then we were on our way again! She was almost 'normal' for the whole ride
Even managed a few trots away from home so I'm super pleased with her
Today the ride took 45 minutes, on Monday the same ride took an hour and a half!
If you'd have told me a week ago that I would be hacking her out alone without anyone on foot I would have laughed, but we are actually doing it
On another note - I lunged her over jumps for the first time yesterday and she is so bold and has quite a pop on her, I think there will be some exciting times ahead!
