So i posted earlier in the week about my horse having a snotty nose and a very nasty cough but fine in himself. Ventapulmin alone didnt work!

Anyway, vet came out Tuesday and gave him more venti, antibiotics and something to thin out his mucus. Vet said it was an upper respiratory infection. He has no hugh temp, is his bubbly self pushing me around and playing in the field bombing around 90 mph, defo not off his food either. He has slight swelling to his salivary glands but the vet said it was linked to him having haylage on the floor instead of his usual hay in the net (grass glands?)

So hes been having all his drugs since Tuesday and his temp is still fine. Absolutely no snot outside his stable (there had been big lumps). So all the snot has gone and hes been going out as normal. Before the antibiotics he was rolling and upon getting up he was litterally coughing his guts up. Yesterday he did one very light cough which i was pleased about.

This morning hes still doing well however when i was mucking out he did a series of coughs, nothing like before but after yesterday i expected no coughing.

Am i expecting too much too soon? Should he be a bit better by now?

Vet is coming back on tuesday and will decide if he needs scoping.

Haven't a clue as you need to be guided by your vet. But I'd just think about how long it takes a human to stop coughing up gunk when you get a chest infection. More than a couple of days. It sounds like he's doing well :)

I almost feel like I shouldnt call her again as she said call me if his temp goes up, which it hasnt. I will bite my tongue and see. I think I am just being a panicky mum :( Luckily there is no gunk now, its more like a dry cough, but doesnt sound as aggressive as before which I guess is good!

Keep all the feed and forage wet or soaked and rinsed, feed on the floor, turnout as much as possible.
Is the stable well ventilated, better plenty of ventilation and an extra rug than any other option. wait till Monday before phoning the vet unless you have grave concerns in the meantime. I would take the temperature twice a day so you know what is happening, [hopefully nothing]
We always used to say if he coughs then blows down the nose this is normal, if he coughs and coughs it is not. There is not much one can do today.

He has to have everything well soaked anyway as he gets choke quite badly, all feed is on the floor now so no nets anymore! Hes out as much as possible and has a nice airy stable. Vet said I have done everything I can do so I guess i just need to roll with it and see what happens. Taking the temp twice a day too.

Shes coming out Tuesday afternoon anyway so i should probably just wait until then unless he goes down hill

Can't you just text your vet and get advice? Even if it just to put your mind to rest? When my mare was going through the worst of her dramas I was in touch with my vet every day by text for about three weeks.

My horse ended up with a cough for the best part of 3 months last summer after a really horrible infection that had got into his lungs - the initial "dramatic" symptoms disappeared pretty quickly but he was left with a residual dry cough for ages. Unfortunately the vet thinks it may have turned into/triggered mild COPD so I'm waiting to see whether he coughs again as the season turns. He's been fine all winter so I'm hoping nothing happens!

My vet will always take a phone call (and even pictures when horse had a nose bleed) and was happy to advise over the phone.
