UPDATE - The Vet came out last Wednesday, gave Charlie a general check over and took some bloods.

Just had a phone call from the Vet to say that the results are back. Charlie has a very low White Blood Cell count, this is more then likely to be caused by a Virus.

Has anyone got any experience of this problem?

There is no actual treatment but apparently giving him a B12 injection should perk him up a bit, I also have to feed him some Aloe Vera Gel.

I'm only allowed to gently hack him until it is sorted which is a complete bummer as the summer Holidays start on Friday and I would have been doing a lot more riding as part of my job

The vet will have to come out every 2 weeks to take bloods until the white Blood cells are back up.

I am sure that many of you will still say that the animal communicator was talking complete rubbish but if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have had the bloods taken so soon and still wouldn't know what was wrong with my boy!


(P.S. Sorry if the medical terms are wrong, I really should write these things down rather then try and remember what I am told

Ooh, well at least you know I suppose, I still think there is SOMETHING about horse communicators, I've heard lots of creepily accurate readings!
 
vitamin B12 (as opposed toV12) will give him a boost

interesting but sorry I'm still to much of a science boff to accept it.

am a little confused too are you sure white cell count isn't currently high and needs to reduce, high white cell counts are indicative of an infection, would assume low was good.

I am sure he said 'his white Blood cells are significantly low' but will double check tomorrow, I assume if they become TO low it is likely to cause problems

yes its poss, particularly if virus has been affecting the white blood cells. I sometimes over think these things so am poss wrong!
 
My TBx mare went very lethargic one winter, no energy, lying down in the field a lot, no interest in absolutely anything. Had vet out, suspected virus, did blood test, low white cells and anemic.

We put my mare on Equisup, I think it has B12 in, iron, helps promote red blood cells & generally a pick me up after illness.

It worked for her, this was many years ago but I'm sure it must be still on the market or something equivalent.
 
I've heared someone else communicating using a picture after the owner rang and told them that the horses eye was in a bad state and it could barely open it etc and at the end of the day after she had been working on the horse using the photo the horses eye was fine and you wouldn't have thought there was nothing wrong with it to start with.
Maybe it got better on its own i don't know just seemed a bit of a coincidence my horses eye took a week for the swelling to go down!?!
 
White blood cells need to be at a happy medium. Too high is bad but too low is also bad!

If they are low it can either mean there is overwhelming infection and all the cells have left the blood to fight problems in the tissues, or the horse has some kind of immunosuppression and there are not enough being produced.

Salmonella and viral infections are two examples of conditions that can give you a low white cell count.

WCC can be high OR low....if I can remember from Uni.... low is viral, high is bacterial ............but I would have thought if vet was querying bacterial infection he would have wacked some antibiotics in.

PS I am a bit of a science boff also...but I believe in all sorts of things that cannot be explained.

I know, I am so happy that I know what the problem is, I was so worried about him before I had the AC done!

He is already feeling better as well which is a good start!
