Those that know my story, I took my horse back from a loaner with a broken leg and scarred legs from previous injury which the girl did not call the vet for. She had lost lots of my equipment and failed to take good care of the horse and failed to call the vet for these injuries. I removed her on the 14th July and since that time the poor horse has been lame and been up and down to the vet college. Having suffered fractures and tendon damage. On the positive note, at least she is still with us, we went through a stage where it was hit and miss whether she would survive.
As time went on and my communications continued to be ignored by the loaner. I decided I would take her to court for at least some of the costs for the veterinary treatment. Treatment is not completed and currently I have spent in excess of 3500 on vet bills and replacing items.
I had the good news that I have received judgement for my initial claim of £1980. I doubt I will receive any money, but at least she will feel the pinch when she goes for a loan and has a CCJ against her name. I felt very strongly that there should be some form of accountability for her lack of care or responsibility. I don’t want her doing the same to another horse or person. Which she almost certainly would, as she does not care two hoots for the horse or have any sense of commitment.

Ah well done in your legal victory - I don't blame you for pursuing her. A frightful experience no owner should have to deal with.
Hopefully what goes around comes around to her !!

I hope your horse continues to recover and congratulations on your legal victory! We really need to send a strong message out to that awful minority of loaners who mistreat their loan horses. It is so aggravating when there are so many excellent loan homes out there.

Exactly this.

Did you report to the RSPCA as well - they'd have been interested I'm sure.

I did, but not really had any interest, I suspect because the horse is no longer in danger...but I do worry as I know this girl will do it again and I have already heard about another horse leaving the same livery yard and being in a worse condition than when it arrived.

Interesting that they weren't interested. As this girl seems to have broken fundamental rule of the animal act.

What a shameless organisisation......

Do you think I should chase them again? I simply stopped hearing anything from them? I don't want to waste their time, but hoped they would at least speak to this person and warn them not to do this again and advise what "caring" for an animal means.

Personally I would - there is clear case for prosecution, an in your shoes I'd be baying for blood from all quarters.

The RSPCA is a charity and as such they are bound by the Charities Act which means they have to justify their spend. If the horse is no longer in any danger and the accused has been proved wrong in court they will not pursue the legal case, and it would not be worth while them talking to the woman, but they would be able to lok at the livery yard as this could be an endemic problem.

Sorry to be so boring, but as useless as they seem in this instance, the RSPCA have been entrusted with peoples money, often their inheritance, and need to prove to their trustees and the charity commission they are not abusing their powers.

Well done on at least getting the judgement. Am not surprised the RSPCA did not take action, they are a waste of space unless camera crews are following them.

How awful to think this person can carry on and do the same thing to other horses. There should be a 'black list' of loaners to avoid.
