So the vet has been - and whilst its not GOOD news its also not TERRIBLE news...

The low down is...

Luca - has hurt his sacroiliac joint. This is pressing on nerves making him look ataxic but there is no nuerological damage! 4 to 8 months of rest and I should have a horse able to be ridden again.

Vet to reassess in 4 months.

River - Ulcer has returned and Navicular has flared up again causing him to be lame in both fronts and his left hind as he loads up his hind end. Vet agrees he's pretty flat and grumpy (sure sign things are not well with him). Back on gastro guard and a steriod painkiller (to also help with severe sweet itch). Raised heel shoes to be put back on as his heels have collapsed a little - she thinks a combination of hard ground and a bit too much hooning in the field are the culprits for his toes and wormer for his tummy - now been given strict instructions on worming routines etc. She wants to speak in two weeks and keep a close eye. There is a chance (strongish she said) he'll come right again but we're keeping a close eye on things...

So all in all - relief as on Thursday she was talking about some very SCARY things being wrong with Luca - but I do have two horses just getting fat for a while! And a close eye is to be kept on River - as the vet said - his soundness remains on a knive edge most of the time - but when we get it right he's brilliant!

Sorry its long and thanks for all the vibes yesterday - if anyones had positive outcomes from any of the above some hope would be great - or just your experiences!!!

A nice coffee for all!!!

Sorry no experiences to share but am glad it's not as bad as it sounded yesterday.
Unfortunately it means a long hot ride-less summer for you but hopefully come winter they'll be well on their way to full recovery.
All the best x

Can't help with most of the above - but do manage my boys ulcers. All the usual stuff - high fibre diet - no cereals at all - bowl of alfalfa before riding etc etc.

They are sent to try us our neds!!

Just wanted to say good luck with it all and hope they both come right.

Was thinking of you last night and had fingers crossed, meant to post to ask how it went.

Tell them no hooning! Good luck on keeping the weight off (Dizz is getting fat, well, fat for her, due to me not riding for weeeeeeks now). Will continue to keep all crossed for you.

Thanks - yes interesting trying to tell a 5yr TB not to Hoon... though its often River who starts it!!!

MrsM - Thanks for crossing the fingers - it must've worked as the vet told me as she was leaving she'd brought everything to PTS just in case it was what she though!

Long summer of rest for them - but everything crossed we're out and about next summer!!! Any tips for keeping the weight off and fittness up whilst I can't ride?!

Re Luca, my lad fell in a horsebox and damaged his sacroiliac joint last June. He was so bad that he crawled off the horsebox using his forelegs and dragging his hind quarters behind him. I thought he had broken his pelvis/leg and would have to be PTS on the side of the road. He managed to stand up after 3 hours of trying but only stayed upright if OH held onto his tail. He suffered terrible ataxia for the next three months, falling down if he tried to do more than walk and was unsteady until about 6 months after the accident. There was a concern that he had banged his head as well as damaging his back, but thankfully this was not the case. It is now a year on, he is back in work doing lots of hacking and and yesterday he jumped over a 1.20m electric fence to get to his girlfriend!

I was advised not to do too much lunging (round pen in my case) as the turning was a big strain for him. Unfortunately he was 1200km away from me and I had to rely on other people to exercise him so I don't think he recovered as quickly as he would have done had he been with me. Keeping them moving is best as box rest or too restricted a space tends to make them stiffen up, so in hand walking and free work is good. I also feed Devil's claw if we are working in case of any inflammation and also Premierflex HA joint supplement.

Hope they both recover quickly and enjoy their summer off

Mrs M - Thank you the relief is immense that its nothing more serious!! They are lovely boys and Luca is a cutie!!

ChicoMio - Wow!! Lu is nowhere hear that bad - your story gives me loads of hope. Vet has said turn out and ten minute walks are best for him at the moment! He's just a little wobbly sometimes and drags his hind feet but can still have a good old burn around with his best mate!

They are going to enjoy the summer off much more than I will...
