I went over this morning to see Soli and encouraged to see a bright cheeky horse who seemed happy to see me.

Vet warned me before he took off the bandages (after reversing Soli into the treatment room as he dosnt like going in). It is not as big as I expected but it is awful. Pics here, one before and one after cleaning

He was sedated and given a nerve block. He is still needing nerve blocks but you can see why, also getting bute and antibiotics in his feed. There is a lot of oozing as expected and will carry on with soft bandages until this is left, He is getting a sort of semi cast with that thick sticking Elastoplast bandage which is put on tightly to offer some stability. He also has a foam type pad on his sole to take pressure off that area and onto the sole, frog and other side. He will get this bandaging for another few days until less oozing and then be put in a cast. This will probably be changed after 5 days and another put on and then he might come home but Im looking at him being there at least another 10 days. He will then have cast on for another 3 weeks or so and then corrective shoeing, but all these are not definite plans as it depends on how it is and there is no way of telling what will happen. They have also stapled the wound above it. They were worried about it initially as deep and on the pastern joint but they arnt worried about that now.

Longer term he is confident the first 1/3rd will heal ok just take time as coronet band still present but the back is a case of wait and see what happens. He will be on full box rest for at least 4 months, he *should* come back into work but cant say that for sure as it depends on how it heals and how deformed.

I am happier now I have seen him and seen it. But yuk!

The finished job

Gosh - he did a thorough job didn't he? Poor love but obviously getting fantastic care and so lucky that he didn't damage anything 'vital'. Good luck with his progress and keep us updated. Hope you are holding up ok as these injuries are so blimmin' stressful.

Ooooh ouch ouch ouch!!

That must have been so scary finding him with the injury, so pleased he is such good hands! Keeping everything crossed for him.

Poor lad, he really did a good job on that. It looks lovely and clean though. Your vets are doing a brilliant job. You must be feeling happier about it too. Did you find out how he did it or was it one of those unexplained field injuries?

Yes I feel happier that I have seen him and it. He must have been caught in the fence (wooden posts broken and wire down) and he has caught foot and the wire has cheesewired it, but there are a few other scrapes going in the wrong direction so who knows. He has 2 tiny little scrapes, one on each bulb, on the other front foot but they are of no worry.

Oh my - that made me wince! However, he is in the best possible place and it sounds like he was really, really lucky. You must be feeling much more relieved now that you have seen him.

Please keep us updated on how he progresses.

First pic is after it was cleaned, second before, but still not too bad. It is oozing/bleeding and soaking through dressings and bandage but that is to be expected and as vet said it is the bodies way of sloughing off all the microscopic crud so that is good, but need to wait till oozing less before cast can go on.

Oh poor boy, but haven't your vets done a fantastic job of cleaning that up. Hope his recovery is a full and speedy one and box rest isn't too much of an issue. One of mine would be fine but I dread to think what the other would be like!

One of ours did almost exactly the same, less coronary band loss than yours but the wire almost cut the whole hoof down the middle through the pedal bone. Bled and oozed for a full 6 weeks with daily bandage changes and soaks in iodine. Took a full year to heal and grow sound but mare was left with a nasty deviation in coronary band which did make her lame with too much hard work.
I would be concerned about the coronary band because how will the horn grow down if its been completely removed?
We did box rest first 2 months but as soon as she could hobble about the yard she spent lots of time walking loose with boot on to stimulate growth.
Hugs and vibes its a nasty one :(

Yes that's the worry. At best he will be left deformed but impossible to say how it will go atm.

Ouch. Glad it's going the right way.

As bad as it looks, remember horses are miracle workers with injuries normally, seem to cope with them far more better than diseases. Hopefully he bounces back to full health in no time. He's in the best place to have every chance of that :) Hugs.
